1. Describe time-sharing multi-user operating systems. Give Two Examples

Time-sharing in data processing is sharing the same operating system by multiple users

using the same central processing unit on different programs working simultaneously. This is

possible because central processing operates faster than most peripheral devices; hence, it can

solve several discrete problems during the input/output process (Oliphant, PP 2020). Examples

of multi-user operating systems are distributed and multiprocessor systems.

2. List and Explain 3 Examples of Distributed Operating Systems

Peer-to-peer systems;

This is a system where two people are connected with a system node where they

exchange and share data. This type of operating system requires a network system to connect.

Client/Server systems;

This is a single server at a time where the clients request the server for a resource, and the

server provides this resource to the client.

OSF/1 operating system;

It is an operating system developed by the Open Software Foundation in the late 1980s

and early 1990s. It was developed at Carnegie Mellon University and is the best Unix

operating system for the DEC Alpha architecture.

3. (I) Explain the Windows operating system.

It is an operating system that is a graphic user interface developed and marketed by

Microsoft Corporation. The main aim of the operating system is to make it easy for the
3

end user to use it, even those who do not have coding experience. It has an application

pre-loaded into the system: Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, Microsoft Edge browser,

Microsoft store, games, Etc. The system has enabled users to multitask, like chatting with

family and friends, playing games, watching videos, and browsing the internet.

Some of the features of the operating system are a desktop, taskbar, control panel,

system information, start menu, registry editor, recycle bin, and command prompt, which

assist the operating system in being user-friendly to use and operate for all ages and

genders.

(ii)Highlight the key difference between Windows and the following operating

systems.

Linux; Windows may be a licensed operating system in which ASCII text files are

inaccessible. It is intended for people who have no programming knowledge, as well as

for business and other industrial users. It is straightforward to use. The difference

between Linux and Windows packages is that Linux is free of charge, whereas Windows

is a marketable package that is costly. The associate operating system is a program that

controls the computer or computer hardware. It acts as a middleman between the user and

the hardware. Linux is an open-source package where users can access the ASCII text file

and improve the code that exploits the system. In contrast, users in Windows cannot

access an ASCII text file, even if it is an authorized OS.

Unix; UNIX is a multi-user, multitasking operating system created at AT&T Bell

Laboratories. This operating system is very popular among scientists, engineers, and
4

academics due to its most valued features, such as flexibility, portability, network

capabilities, Etc. While windows Microsoft Windows is a graphical user interface (GUI)-

based operating system that offers user-friendly graphical alternatives to most command-

line functions. Microsoft released a series of versions that included the most recent

features.

Solaris; Windows and Solaris are two distinct operating systems. Solaris is an

open-source operating system, whereas Windows is a closed system. Solaris uses a Unix

kernel, whereas Windows uses an NT kernel. Solaris is intended for use on servers,

whereas Windows is intended for use on personal computers. Solaris supports multiple

processors, whereas Windows only supports one. Solaris can run on various platforms,

whereas Windows can only run on x86-based platforms.

MacOS; Windows is a collection of proprietary graphical operating systems

distributed by Microsoft Incorporation. Microsoft Windows is another name for it. Its

current family members include Windows NT and Windows IoT. It previously included

Windows 9x, Mobile, and Phone, all of which are no longer supported (Tomsho, pp.

2020). It is the most widely used operating system in computers. Microsoft released the

first version of Windows in 1985. Windows 11 is the most recent version of Windows for

personal computers. While MacOS Apple Incorporation's macOS is a series of

proprietary graphical operating systems. It was previously known as Mac OS X and,

later, OS X. It is designed specifically for Apple Mac computers. It runs on the Unix

operating system. C, C++, Objective-C, assembly language and Swift were used to create

it. After Windows, it is the second most popular operating system for personal computers.
5

Apple released the first version of macOS in 2001. The most recent stable macOS version

is 10.15.1, also known as Catalina (Aiyeniko, pp. 2020).

Android; Google's Android operating system is a mobile operating system. It is

built on a modified Linux kernel and other open-source software. It is intended for

touchscreen mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets. It was created in C, Java,

C++, and other programming languages (Papoutsis, pp. 2022). Google released the first

version of Android in 2008. Android 13 is the most recent stable version. It is completely

free of charge. It is the most widely used operating system in the world.

Sun microsystems; Sun Microsystems, Inc. (Sun for short) was an American

technology company that created the Java programming language, the Solaris operating

system, ZFS, the Network File System (NFS), and SPARC microprocessors. Sun has

significantly contributed to the evolution of several keys (Beebe, pp. 2022) computing

technologies, including Unix, RISC processors, thin client computing, and virtualized

computing.
