Nervous System (Parts & Functions)

The document discusses the nervous system and its key parts and functions. It is divided into two main sections - the central nervous system (CNS) and the peripheral nervous system (PNS). The CNS contains the brain and spinal cord. The brain controls thought and activity while the spinal cord controls simple reflexes. The PNS connects the CNS to the body and contains the somatic and autonomic systems. The somatic system controls voluntary movement while the autonomic system controls involuntary functions like breathing and digestion. Disruptions to the nervous system can impact communication between all body systems.

of the nervous system.
Realize the importance of maintaining

a healthy nervous system.
Nervous System
The nervous system connects all our
body parts and transmits signals
from one part to another. It is a system
of cells, tissues, and organs that
regulates the body’s responses to
internal and external stimuli.
Nervous System
The nervous system is responsible for
receiving and processing information
from the external environment of an
organism. Through the nervous system,
the organism is enabled to respond to
these external factors accordingly.
Major Divisions
and Parts of the
Nervous System
A. Central Nervous System
(CNS) - serves as the main
processing center for the entire
nervous system. It consists of
two main components:
Brain & Spinal cord.
A. Central Nervous System (CNS)
1. Brain - This is an organ located
within the skull that functions as
organizer and distributor of
information for the body. It has
three main parts:
Cerebrum - The

and controls automatic
functions such as breathing, Cerebellum
digestion, heart rate, and blood - The part under the

posture, balance, and
coordination.

2. Spinal cord - This serves as a
channel for signals between the
brain and the rest of the body and
controls simple musculoskeletal
reflexes without input from the
brain.
B. Peripheral Nervous System
(PNS) - connects the Central
Nervous System (CNS) to the
organs and limbs. It has two
main divisions:
Somatic NS & Autonomic NS.
B. Peripheral Nervous System (PNS)
1. Somatic Nervous System - This
system is associated with the
voluntary control of body
movements and has two main parts:
Spinal Nerves & Cranial Nerves.
Nerves – are like cables
that carry electrical
impulses between your
brain and the rest of
your body.
Cranial Nerves
- the nerve fibers that
carry information into
and out of the brain
stem.

Spinal Nerves
- the nerves that carry
motor and sensory
signals between the
spinal cord and the
body.
B. Peripheral Nervous System (PNS)
2. Autonomic Nervous System -
This system is associated with the
of body movements and
involuntary control has two
subdivisions: Sympathetic NS &
Parasympathetic NS.

What is the vital role
of the nervous system
that may affect the
other systems?
Helps all the parts of the body to
communicate with each other. It also
reacts to changes both outside and
inside the body. The nervous system
uses both electrical and chemical
means to send and receive messages.
These electrical signals travel among your
brain, skin, organs, glands, and muscles.
The messages help you move your limbs
and feel sensations, like pain. Any
disruptions in the Nervous System may
cause miscommunications between all
body parts and might result in major
damage both within and outside the body.
Assignment
Choose one part of the Nervous System and
search for what might happen to the human
body if this part will not carry out its
functions well, and how to keep that part
healthy and well-functioning. Write your
answers on a 1 half sheet of paper.
Thanks!
