Math 21 Problem Set 3

1. This document provides a problem set for a Mathematics 21 course. It contains 6 sections with multiple choice and free response problems involving limits, derivatives, word problems, and optimization. 2. Section II describes the vertical motion of a bludger attacking Harry Potter and asks students to analyze properties of the position, velocity, and acceleration functions at given times. 3. Section III involves finding extrema, approximating values using linear approximations, analyzing price-demand functions, and minimizing cost of a cylindrical cake.

Mathematics 21 Problem Set 3

First Semester AY 2023-2024 Due on 30 November 2023

Work individually or by pair. Write your solutions and answers neatly on bluebook/s.
You may consult your solutions at MBAN 212 during consultation hours or by email.

I. Evaluate the following limits. (4 points each)

csc x
1. lim− (Hint: Answer is −1) 2. lim (1 + 2 csch x)sinh x (Hint: Answer is e2 )
x→π 1 + cot x x→+∞

II. A bewitched bludger is attacking Harry Potter on the ground while moving on a vertical path.
The height of the bludger from the ground after t seconds is given by s(t) = t3 − 24t2 + 144t − 200
feet. A negative height means that the bludger dug underground. The table of signs for the
velocity v(t) and acceleration a(t) of the bludger is given. Answer the following. (1 point each)

t 0 (0, 4) 4 (4, 8) 8 (8, 12) 12 (12, +∞)

s(t) −200 56 −72 −200
v(t) + + 0 − − − 0 +
a(t) − − − − 0 + + +

1. Find the velocity and acceleration of the bludger at any time t.

2. Time interval(s) when the bludger is going upwards.
3. Time interval(s) when the bludger has increasing velocity.
4. Time interval(s) when the bludger is slowing down.
5. Time interval(s) when the bludger is speeding up with decreasing velocity.
6. What is the total distance travelled by the bludger after 8 seconds?
7. What is the highest position of the bludger on the interval (2, 5)?
8. When did the bludger attain its lowest velocity on the interval (0, 12)?

III. Do as indicated.

1. Determine the x-coordinates

 π 3π at which the absolute extrema of f (x) = sin2 x + sin x occur
on the interval 2 , 2 . (3 points)

2. Let g(x) = (36 − 4x) x. Find√ the local linear approximation of g at x = 4, and use it to
approximate the value of 19.96 4.01. Answer should have 2 decimal places. (3 points)

3. The K-pop group Red Velvet is currently working on their new album. The SM Entertain-
ment finds that the price-demand function of x albums is given by
x
p(x) = 3025 + thousands of won,
1000
while the production cost is given by
x2
C(x) = + 1000x + 2023 thousands of won.
500
Use the marginal profit function to help SM entertainment approximate the profit earned
in selling the 1001st album. (3 points)
4. A pastry chef wants to bake a layer of blueberry cheesecake in the shape of a closed cylinder
with a volume of 216π in3 . The cost for making the side is 100 pesos/in2 while the cost for
making the circular part is 50 pesos/in2 . Find the radius and height of the cake that will
minimize the cost of baking the dessert. (A right circular cylinder with height h and radius
r has volume πr2 h, side area 2πrh, and top/bottom area πr2 ) (5 points)

5. Giselle, Winter, and Ningning are standing at the three corners of an isosceles triangle
formation at their concert. Karina is located at the midpoint of the noncongruent side
between Ningning and Giselle. If Winter is walking towards Karina at a rate of 3 ft/s while
the other two are walking away from Karina at the same rate of 2 ft/s, how fast is the area
of the triangle changing at the moment when Karina is 10 feet away from the rest of the
group? Interpret the sign of the answer. (Hint: Answer is −10 ft2 /s) (5 points)

6. Assume that UP Town Center is in the North, Sunken Garden is in the West, and IMath
building is located at the origin. At 10:15 am, Mikasa just bought starbs in UPTC which is
2000 meters from IMath and is running late for her Math 22 class at a rate of 4 m/s. At the
same time, Eren walkout from his Math 21 class and is walking towards Sunken Garden at
a rate of 2 m/s. How fast is the distance between Mikasa and Eren changing at 10:20 am?
Interpret the sign of the answer. (Hint: Answer is −2 m/s) (5 points)

IV. Bonus: (No partial points given)

x3
x3

1. Evaluate lim . (Hint: Answer is e−4 ) (5 points)
x→+∞ x3 + 4

2. Each Math 21 student can solve 3 items of the problem set per day. Mi-ho, a Math 21 student,
wants to work with her classmates to answer the problem set. However, any additional
member of Mi-ho’s group will decrease the number of items each member can solve per day
by 1. How many classmates should Mi-ho work with to maximize the total number of items
they can solve per day? (Hint: The function is a degree 2 polynomial ) (5 points)

Total: 40 points
