READING
1 Look at the text. What is it?
a An interview b An article c A story

Roger Philips, the reporter for Good News, is at Max Poole’s house. Max has just returned from his
Europe tour.
R: Thank you for letting me into your house. It’s cool! Did you decorate it yourself?
M: Thanks! No, the decorators were a group of teenagers from a local state school. I met them when they
were working for a school project. They interviewed me and I loved their work, so I asked them to decorate
my house. They were thrilled!
R: Oh, I see. This shows how you like helping others.
M: Yes, I do. I have a pretty good life, and I think it’s my obligation to help others.
R: The good thing is that it’s not just about giving people money. You give them your time, too.
M: And it’s very rewarding, much more rewarding than applause at the end of a concert.

R: Tell me about your social involvement at present.

M: I’ve opened a hotel. It’s for tourists, but it’s a hotel school as well. The students are all people with
disabilities. They learn about the hotel industry, and they have a job, too. I’m opening a restaurant, too,
under the same conditions.
R: That’s fantastic!
M: I have also started a housing project. It’s for families with no money. I give them the materials to build
their house and there are groups of volunteers who also teach them different jobs: electricity, plumbing,
painting, etc. So they build their own house, they learn a job and they ‘pay me back’ with the money they
earn from their new job. I mean, I do not do this to make more money, it’s simply that I believe that just
charity is bad for people. We all need to have a job and earn our living, don’t you think?
R: Absolutely! Now let’s turn to a different topic.

2 Read the text and tick the topics that were mentioned.
a Family b House c Social work d Concerts

3 Read again and write T (true) or F (false).

a Roger works for Good News.
b Max lives in Europe.
c He hired professionals to decorate his house.
d ‘Rewarding’ is something positive.
e People can stay at the school hotel.
f Max has just opened a restaurant.
g Families get more benefits than the house.
h Max thinks that working is important in a person’s life.
i We get to know what Max does for a living.
