Rounding Off Numbers

This document is a lesson plan from the Buto Elementary School in the Jimalalud District 2 of Negros Oriental, Philippines. It provides the content, objectives, procedures and activities for a Grade 4 math lesson on rounding whole numbers to the nearest thousand. The lesson involves rounding attendance estimates from three indigenous tribes planning a traditional celebration to simplify event planning. Students will practice rounding numbers through group work and an application problem, rounding a mango harvest total. The goal is for students to understand and apply the rule of rounding numbers to the nearest place value.

Write your answers on your “Show- Me-Boards”.

A. If we skip count by 10s,

1. 28 is nearer to ______.
2. 42 is nearer to ______.
3. 61 is nearer to ______.
B. If we skip count by 100s,
1. 121 is nearer to _______ than______.
2. 389 is nearer to _______ than______.
3. 512 is nearer to _______ than______.

B. Motivation Posting the problem-

(Show a plastic jar of rice grains.)
Ask: Can we tell the exact number of rice grains at a glance? (No)
About how many rice grains do you think are there in the plastic jar?
(thousands or millions)
C. Presentation Present this problem –

In a remote village, the indigenous community is organizing a

traditional celebration. The number of participants from different tribes
is crucial for planning various activities. The tribe leaders provide
estimates of their group sizes, but they prefer to round off the numbers
to make the planning simpler.

The first tribe estimates their attendance at 79 582 people, the

second tribe at 96 454 people, and the third tribe at 75 219 people. The
organizers decide to round off these numbers to the nearest thousands
for a more manageable count.

Ask:

How many people will the first tribe contribute to the celebration after
rounding off to the nearest thousands?

What is the rounded-off attendance for the second tribe?

If the third tribe rounds off their attendance to the nearest thousands,
how many people will be counted?

After rounding off, consider the cultural diversity and ensure that the
celebration is inclusive of all tribes. Discuss how rounding off numbers
helps streamline the planning process while respecting the cultural
preferences of the indigenous community.

Look at the table below.

D. Discussion (Using the Place Value)
Say: Here’s a way to round off numbers. Using this number 365 289, let
us round this to the nearest tens, hundreds, thousands, ten thousands, and
hundred thousands.
Ask: What digit is in the tens place? (8)
What digit is to the right of the rounding
digit/place?(9)
Say: Since “9 ˃ 5,” round up. Add 1 to the digit 8 then
change all the digits to the right of the rounding
place to zeros.
Ask: What would be your answer? (365 290)
Say: If the digit to the right of the rounding place is 5 or
more, add 1 to the rounding place then change all the
digits to the right to zeros.

Ask: What digit is in the thousands place? (5)
What digit is to the right of the rounding
digit/place?(2)
Say: Since “2 ˂ 5,” round down. Retain the digit 5 then
change all the digits to the right of the rounding
place to zeros.
Ask: What would be your answer? (365 000)

Say: If the digit to the right of the rounding place is less than 5, retain
the digit of the rounding place then change all the
digits to the right to zeros.

E. Developing Mastery Group activity – Say: Do this in 5 minutes only. So, members of the
group, what should you do in order to finish your work right away?

F. Application Solve this problem.
Jorge harvested 24 389 kilograms of mangoes.
About how many kilograms of mangoes were harvested?
(Answer: 4 000)
G. Generalization Ask: How do we round numbers? (To round numbers, identify the
rounding digit, round up (add 1) if the digit to its right is 5 or greater.
Round down (retain the digit) if it is less than 5. Then change all the
digits to the right of the rounding place to zeros.)

H. Evaluation Round the following to the nearest thousands.

Week 2, Day 1

Content: Rounding Numbers to the Nearest Thousand

DISCUSSIONS:

To round numbers…

1. Look for the place of the digit to be rounded off.

2. Check the digit to its right. If it is 4 or below, round it down.

3. If it is 5 or above, round it up.

There are two ways on how to round numbers. First is by using

a number line and second is by using the place value.

To round numbers using the place value, identify the rounding

digit. Round up or add 1 to the rounding digit if the digit to its right is 5 or
greater. Round down or retain the rounding digit if the digit to its right is
