PROTOTYPE INFORMATION
INSTRUCTIONS
The BB18 ¼ class were used on a variety of fast duties: goods, mixed traffic and
passenger. But the advent of diesels just a few short years later meant they were
rapidly displaced from the prestigious duties, seeing out their final years on the
mundane duties. All were withdrawn from regular service by 1970. Fortunately 6
have survived into preservation, with over half in operation or under restoration.
The BB18’s have achieved a level of infamy in the Australian rail landscape.
No.1089 is historically significant as the last steam locomotive built in Australia,
and the last to enter service with QR in 1958. No.1072 moved interstate upon
withdrawal in 1970, becoming one of the flagship locomotives at the world-
famous Zig Zag Railway in the Blue Mountains, where it was repainted in lined
black, and named ‘City of Lithgow’.
