Design Note For The Narrow-Gauge Formation Repair

This report provides recommendations to mitigate the hydraulic impact on a narrow-gauge railway embankment. It recommends installing hydraulic side drains on both sides of the track to intercept and divert surface water away from the embankment, preventing instability. The side drains should be designed based on hydrological studies to accommodate anticipated water flow volumes and connect to existing culverts. A geotechnical investigation is also recommended to assess soil conditions and inform drainage design. Implementing these recommendations, especially the side drains, will reduce hydraulic impact and support the long-term stability and safety of the railway.

Recommendations for Mitigating Hydraulic Impact on Narrow-Gauge Embankment

Introduction:

This report outlines a suite of considered recommendations focused on mitigating the

potential hydraulic impact on the Narrow-Gauge embankment. These recommendations
stem from a comprehensive review of the Inspection Report dated December 24, 2024,
which documented the concerning collapse of the narrow-gauge track formation.

Background:

The report identified three culverts beneath the Narrow-Gauge embankment: two 3-cell
structures measuring 1.2mx1.2m each and two 2-cell structures measuring 1.2mx1.2m
each. Additionally, a newly constructed 1.5mx1.5m culvert serves the area. The report
also identified three water courses, tributaries to the main water course, that drain
through these culverts.

While the existing and new culverts provide basic drainage, additional measures are
necessary to comprehensively address the potential hydraulic impact on the
embankment's integrity.

Proposed Mitigation:

To mitigate these risks, we recommend the installation of hydraulic side drains on

both the left and right sides of the Narrow-Gauge track, covering the area under
consideration. These drains should be designed and constructed to meet the following
specifications:

 Length: The length should cover the area of concerns.

 Function: Intercept and divert surface water away from the embankment base,
preventing infiltration that could compromise stability.
 Discharge: Connect to the existing culverts or a designated drainage channel
designed to handle the anticipated water flow.
Material and Design:

 The cross-section should be designed to accommodate anticipated water flow based on

hydrological studies and considering potential future increases due to climate change.
 The design should ensure adequate slope and capacity for efficient water flow,
considering factors like soil permeability, rainfall intensity, and potential debris
accumulation.

Additional Considerations:

 Geotechnical Investigation: A site-specific geotechnical investigation is recommended

to assess soil conditions and potential drainage challenges.
 Vegetative Cover: Establishing appropriate vegetative cover on the embankment
slopes can further reduce surface water infiltration and erosion.

Conclusion:

Implementing these recommendations, particularly the installation of well-designed side

drains, will significantly reduce the potential hydraulic impact on the Narrow-Gauge
embankment. This proactive measure will contribute to the long-term structural integrity,
safety, and operational efficiency of the critical railway infrastructure.
