Catch - Up Activities

Grade 6 students at Daniel A. Avena Elementary School participated in various Catch-Up activities to enhance their reading skills, including a choral reading performance and spelling bee in January, choosing stories to read independently with a follow-up word search game. In February, students were divided into groups based on reading ability for targeted activities - independent readers did reading enhancement, instructional readers did vocabulary work, and struggling readers focused on phonics and sight words. Teachers then met to discuss strategies, materials, and plan for future sessions.

Grade 6 Amethyst and Topaz were divided into three groups based on their reading ability. Group 1
consists of independent readers for Reading Enhancement. Group 2 consists of instructional readers for
Reading Intervention and Group 3 consists of non- reader and frustration readers.

Reading Enhancement was facilitated by Sir Conrado R. Flores, Grade 6 subject teacher.

Reading Intervention for Non- Reader and Frustration readers was facilitated by Ma’am Evelyn C.
Tolentino, Grade 6 adviser of Topaz. She focused on the phonics and basic sight words.

Reading Intervention for Instructional readers was facilitated by Ma’am Carmina Valenzuela, Grade
6 adviser of Amethyst. She focused on the vocabulary enhancement by listing words using the innovative
materials and tell its meaning. She also used the strategies of pair reading, group reading and individual
reading to enhance the reading abilities of the learners.
After the Catch- Up activities, we conducted a collaborative meeting with the Grade 6 teachers to share the
experiences during the session. We also discussed the strategies and innovative materials used to our learners. We
planned and determined what are the materials we need to prepare for the next Catch- Up activities.
