Why to Learn Computer ?
Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication & Division of maths is being
used by everyone. Maths helps you in all professions. By the
same way MS office & internet is being used by people of all
walks. For this purpose, we will try to teach you introduction of
computer science & Basics of MS Office through whatsapp,
youtube and this blog.
Its Applications (One who learns this course) :
* Will be able to use MS Office for different purposes.
* Will be able to know the names of computer equipments and
basics of computer science.
* Basics of Networking.
* This will also help you to pass general computer section (MS
Office + Introduction to Computer) of job tests conducted by
different testing services for Teaching, clerkship & other
computer related jobs.
Computer Anxiety
We people have fear, many people think its not easy to learn &
become expert to solve Computer section in different job tests.
So, the fear from computers is called Computer anxiety.

The one who uses Ms Excel, Ms Word & knows basics of

computer: i-e browser, search engine and social media, he will
not be fail in general tests for computer. As in general tests, they
will not ask your questions from Java, PHP, C language nor from
database, you will be asked simple questions.
History of Computer
You will not believe that this was first computer namely ABACUS,
it has now been developed as the smart-phones (micro-
computers) in our hands.

In the early 1830s, this ABACUS calculating instrument was

replaced by Charles Babbage's Analytical Engine. It was a
mechanical Computer. Charles Babbage is known as father of
computer because of this invention. It could perform simple
arithmetic calculations.

Following picture is of mechanical computer invented by Charles

Babbage. A mechanical computer is a computer built from
mechanical components such as levers and gears rather than
electronic components. The most common examples are adding
machines and mechanical counters, which use the turning of
gears to increment output displays.

make calculations involving large numbers. In 1944, Mark I

computer was built as an agreement between IBM and Harvard.
It was the first programmable digital machine. first programmer
for Mark I was John von Neumann, his first Program was installed
on 29 March 1944.

Generations of Computer
Before going to the MCQs test of computer introduction section,
look at generations of computer part.
The generations means the distribution of period into sections
explaining time by time change or evaluation in field of computer.
As this machine has been evolved with the passage of time.
These generations are counted after the invention of first
electric Computer
1st generation of computer: (1946-1959 (vacuum tube invented)

6
KHALIQ VIRTUAL ACADEMY- Booklet for Computer Section (SST BPS16)

2nd generation of computer: (1959-1965 (transistor invented )

3rd generation of computer: (1965-1971(Integrated circuit
invented )
4th generation of computer: (1971-present (microprocessor
invented )
5th generation of computer: Scientist are working on Artificial
intelligence, to make human like machines, that may have be
decision making powers.
Mostly testing services ask about the period of generation &
invention in that period, so kindly remember these all generation,

Chapter 2: Introduction to Computer

Dear Aspirants of SST BPS16 General Science category!
Computer is very necessary for all job tests. As per my previous

13
KHALIQ VIRTUAL ACADEMY- Booklet for Computer Section (SST BPS16)

test experience, I will update some chapters/topics that have

higher scope & chances of repetition of those MCQs. So,
following chapter is also important. Read it carefully and then
solve following MCQs test.
Introduction to Computer
CPU: Central processing unit is called Brain of computer, its
communication system that controls all parts of computer
peripherals.
Storage devices: processors have to deal with storage devices.
First of all, data is moved from secondary storage (hard drive also
called Auxiliary memory) to primary storage (RAM also called
main memory). After it, RAM sends it to cache memory. After the
cache memory, it is sent to processor for processing the data.
Secondary storage is also called non-volatile that means it saves
our data permanently until we delete it ourselves. RAM is
volatile memory, it saves data for a short period of time until
computer is switched on.

Cache memory: (Pronounced as “cash”) is the volatile memory

which is nearest to the CPU. It provides high-speed data access
to a computer microprocessor. It saves recently used programs,
its an intermediate memory between RAM & Hard disk.

14
KHALIQ VIRTUAL ACADEMY- Booklet for Computer Section (SST BPS16)

Input device: by which we give commands to computer, like

keyboard, mouse or scanner, while output devices that produce
results after giving input (like: printer, monitor screen &
loudspeakers), processor is an intermediate device between
input / output devices, that get commands from input device and
process that given command and then send results to output
devices.
Lets say: I type my name Abdul Khalique through input device
(keyboard), it sends message to processor, processor will
process this message and will send it to output device
(monitor/screen).
What is high level & low level language?
Human understandable language is high level language &
machine language (0,1) is low level language that is understood
by computer machine only.
In the first generation of computers, programmers had to write
softwares (instructions) for computer in (0,1). After language
translators: like assembler, compiler and interpretors. Now
programmers perform the job of software designing
(programming) in high level language.
Lets suppose in C++ (a programming language), when we write
printf("Ahmed"), compiler(language translator) will convert high

15
KHALIQ VIRTUAL ACADEMY- Booklet for Computer Section (SST BPS16)

level (human understandable) language into machine language

to make the computer print Ahmed on screen.
Main difference between compiler and interpretor is that
compiler compiles whole program at a time while interpretor
compiles it line by line.

Chapter 4: Basics of Networking

From the past experience of PST JEST Computer sections, we
have come to know that their are almost 3-4 MCQs out of 10
from Networking section. Not only teaching jobs but this also will
help you in SST BPS16 , LDC, UDC, Assistant & other computer
related jobs conducted by IBA Sukkur & other testing services.
Basics of Networking
Connection of computers with one another for sharing resources
& information is called Network. as we perceive today that
because of information technology, sharing information from
one place to other became very easy.
Scope of networking:

28
KHALIQ VIRTUAL ACADEMY- Booklet for Computer Section (SST BPS16)

LAN (Local Area Network): When computers are attached to one

an other & share data / resources within a office or school in
short or limited area is local area Network.
MAN (Metropolitan Area Network): When computers are
attached to one an other & share data / resources from a city to
an other city is metropolitan area Network.
WAN(Wide Area Network): When computers are attached to
one an other & shar e data / resources from a part of world to
other part of world is wide area network, its example is internet
which connects the whole world.
PAN (Personal Area Network): Though its part of local area
network, but some books explain it individually, when two
people share data with one another through a bluetooth or
zapya application, it will then called personal area network.
IP address (Internet Protocol):
If we want to interact with any one through mobile, we will
contact them through their mobile number. By the same way to
interact with a device through internet or local Area Network,
we need their IP address. Because each device that comes on
internet owns an IP address. IP stands for "Internet Protocol,".
What is Protocol ?: Its the set of rules governing the format of
data sent via the internet or local network. As we see today
mostly all smart-phones used in Pakistan uses Android as

29
KHALIQ VIRTUAL ACADEMY- Booklet for Computer Section (SST BPS16)

operating system & they all use same mobile chargers. As in the
condition, if we sell our smart-phone, no need to purchase
charger each time or family members may use chargers of one
an other. So, this agreement between all companies i-e
(Samsung, Vivo, Oppo) to make same chargers is actually a
protocol or agreement. So, before sharing data on internet, the
protocol are set that each device & each operating system may
send and receive data on internet.
ISP (Internet Service Provider):
The term Internet service provider (ISP) is a company that
provides Internet services to both individuals & companies.
Largest ISP in Pakistan is PTCL (Pakistan telecommunication
company ltd.)

BASICS of Networking MCQs

Chapter 5: Commonly used Computer terminologies.

Dear Aspirants of SST BPS16! Computer is very necessary for all

job tests. As per my previous test experience, I will update some
chapters/topics that have higher chances to appear in Sindh
Commission tests. So following chapter is also important. Read it
carefully and then solve following MCQs test.
Commonly used Computer terminology
What is Browser ?
A Browser is a software that helps us to access any website/web
address or URL.
What is URL / Web address ?
URL = Uniform Resource Locator is the actual address of any
website, this *www.google.com* is URL or web address, through
this address we can access the server of Google to get services
from it.
What is server ?

34
KHALIQ VIRTUAL ACADEMY- Booklet for Computer Section (SST BPS16)

Server is a computer that provide services to other computers.

Lets suppose iam withdrawing an amount from ATM machine,
before cash withdrawal, ATM machine will access National bank
server to confirm available balance in my account.
What is Client ?
A Computer that receive services is client. If we are accessing
google.com. It will provide help to search content on internet.
We will call it server. My computer that receives services from
google.com is client computer.
What is social media ?
As we have 3 mediums of information sharing. Electronic media
(television), print media (Newspapers) & social media( Facebook,
twitter, instagram, whatsapp, youtube & etcetera). Advantage of
social media is that everyone their share their expressions. While
in print media, news is shared through journalists.
What is Search engine ?
Search engine is a website that helps us searching content on
internet. If we need sindhi MCQs and we don't have any
particular URL or site for it. Then i will search it on google.com (a
search engine). It will then show different links where there will
be sindhi MCQs available. yahoo.com and bing.com are also
search engines.

35
KHALIQ VIRTUAL ACADEMY- Booklet for Computer Section (SST BPS16)

What is encryption ?
Hiding information from common people, and make it readable
for desired person to whom we are sending it is encryption. Lets
suppose i meet with one of friend face to face first and then ask
him/her to forward three letters while reading my letter. If I am
writing him/her ebiip, if we forward 3 letters, e will be h, b will
be e, so through this we will come to know that my friend has
sent me hello in her/his letter. In past, kings would use these
tricks to save the messages from the postman / or the person by
whom they were sending letters to the other kings. Now days its
used in networking to secure the data from hackers.
What is Artificial intelligence?
Making computers able to make decisions & showing some
intelligence like diagnosis of diseases, voice recognition & face
detection are its examples. as we human learn from past
experience and conclude some results on its basis. So, its being
tried that computers may learn from their past and conclude
some results.
What is Simulation ?
To provide real-like imaginary scenery for learners through
Computer is Simulation. lets suppose Piloting is not like learning
bicycle in our childhood, where we drop & regain ourselves to
ride bicycle again. For learning piloting a person will sit in a room

36
KHALIQ VIRTUAL ACADEMY- Booklet for Computer Section (SST BPS16)

where he/she will have be screen from all sides to make him/her
feel that he/she is in airplane. So, before flying in air, he/she gets
training in an imaginary environment.

What is font ?
Text that iam writing here is called fonts.
Font size: minimum & maximum text size or font size is 8-72
respectively.

50
KHALIQ VIRTUAL ACADEMY- Booklet for Computer Section (SST BPS16)

Font Style: Calibri, Times New Roman or Arial are font Style.
as everyone has unique hand writing, some write italic, some
write flowery ABC (Gullan wari ABC), these all are called font
style, officially Arial, Calibri or Times New Roman are official
text styles.
Font effect: Bold, Italic, regular or underline are font effects.
Header and footer: At the same time, when you want to print
same text on head or foot of each page, we use header and
footer from insert Tab.
Drop-Cap: Increasing size of first letter in paragraph is Drop-
Cap.
May be you have noticed this in the Dawn or the Express News.

E xample E in Example is dropcap.

Hyperlink: Adding any link into the documents is called

hyperlink. If iam typing khaliqgtk.blogspot.com in MS-WORD.

Ctrl+ S Save
Ctrl+shift+= Make any letter superscript

Ctrl+= make any letter subscript

F7 Spell check in documents
Ctrl + B Bold
Ctrl+I Italic the text
Ctrl + H = Find & Replace
Page Margin: For binding purposes of any Book that we print
through MS WORD, we leave some blank spaces from top,
bottom, left or right of any page in page setup settings.
Remember there are only 4 page margins (top, bottom, left or
right) that means we can leave few centimeters blank for binding
purposes from these four sides of our page before printing.
Alignment: Many people think that alignment and margin is
same, which is very wrong. Alignment is position of text that we
set in our document. When i write the Heading of any topic, I set
its alignment (position) at center. We can say that center is an
alignment not a margin.

(i) Hacking
Hacking is perhaps the most common crime in the computer
world.
Hackers can steal our WiFi, email or social media accounts'
passwords.

73
KHALIQ VIRTUAL ACADEMY- Booklet for Computer Section (SST BPS16)

Hackers also attack a website and take it down. However, the

scope of hacking is much wider. The hackers can also steal
sensitive information from government and business
organizations, make fraudulent transactions and erase data on
the cloud or network computers.

(ii) Credit and Debit Card Scam:

Keeping debit or credit cards is a common practice but insecure
use of these cards can be dangerous. If a person has information
about our debit or credit card he or she can make fraudulent
transactions. There are various ways to get this information. One
way is through scamming.
Scammers set small machines inside an ATM or credit card
machine.
These machines copy the data which is then misused by the
scammers.
Debit and credit cards are also secured with PIN codes. User has
to keep this code secret otherwise any person can use the card
for online shopping and other purposes. All he or she needs to
know our credit card number, PIN and security code printed on
the back of the cards.
(iii) Phishing

74
KHALIQ VIRTUAL ACADEMY- Booklet for Computer Section (SST BPS16)

Phishing is a method of trying to gather personal information

using false e-mails and websites. In Phishing, perpetrators
contact the target person through email, telephone or text
message and pose as a legitimate and trusted
individual. He or she asks the target to provide sensitive data
such as personally identifiable information, banking and credit
card details and passwords for different reasons. The
information is then used to access different accounts and can
result in identity theft and financial loss.
(iv) Clickjacking
Have you ever seen any video tagged as "OMG? You won't
believe what this boy has done!" or did you find a button on a
website that asked to click to claim a reward you had never
applied for? This is a kind of fraud which is called Clickjacking.
Usually, culprits target children or novice internet users to click
on a link containing malware or trick them into sharing private
information via social media sites.

(v) Cyber Bullying or Harassment

Electronic means like a computer, mobile phone or internet are
also used for online bullying or harassment. Harmful bullying
behavior can include posting rumors, threats, passing
inappropriate remarks, leaking personal information,

75
KHALIQ VIRTUAL ACADEMY- Booklet for Computer Section (SST BPS16)

blackmailing and committing hate speech. The perpetrator does

it with the intent to cause harm to the victim. Victims may
experience lower self-esteem, intent to commit suicide and a
variety of negative emotional responses, including being scared,
frustrated, angry and depressed.
Cyber Attack
Cyber-attacks occur when a cybercriminal uses computer or any
device to launch attacks to other single or multiple computer
networks.
The culprit tries to enter in a computer system and network
through cracking, scam links, phishing or any other method.
Generally cyber- attacks are committed for getting any benefit
or causing harm to victim computer, network or websites. A
cyber-attack either disables the targeted computer, deletes
information or knocks it offline. It may also steal information
from the computer or network.

MALWARE
The term malware is the contraction of malicious software.
Malware is a broad term that encompasses computer viruses,
worms, spyware, adware and others. Malware is a program that
is written generally to cause a mess. They can be so dangerous

76
KHALIQ VIRTUAL ACADEMY- Booklet for Computer Section (SST BPS16)

that they can also damage devices. However commonly malware

encrypt, steal or delete data, hijack core functions of computing
and disturb different activities.
Different Malware
Types of malware can inchude computer viruses, worms, adware,
and spyware.

(1) Computer Virus

A computer virus is a computer program that can spread across
computers and networks by making copies of itself, usually
without the user's knowledge. It can also modify other computer
programs, insert its own code and change computer settings.
Viruses are harmful. They can range from displaying irritating
messages to make all the documents inaccessible or even delete
them. Viruses generally latch on a host file and when they
execute they infect other files or programs. Boot Sector,
Resident, Macro Viruses and File infector are some examples of
viruses.

(ii) Worm

computer. A worm can replicate itself without any human

77
KHALIQ VIRTUAL ACADEMY- Booklet for Computer Section (SST BPS16)

interaction. does not need to attach itself to a file or program to

cause damage. It can do several malicious tasks, such as
dropping other malware, copying itself onto devices physically
attached to the affected system, deleting fles, and consuming
internal storage and memory resources.

(iii) Adware
Adware is advertising-supported software. They present endless
ads and pop-up windows that could potentially consume
memory and processing resources. Adware can also change the
different settings of internet browsers like homepage and
default search engine. Normally, these are not as dangerous as
other malware. However, Adware annoys the user and slows
down the processing. The advertisements produced by adware
are sometimes in the form of a pop-up or sometimes in little
windows that many not be closed. Adware programs include
games, desktop toolbars or utilities. Commonly, adware is web-
based and collects web browser data to target advertisements,
especially pop-ups.

(iv) Spyware
Spyware is a malware that monitors a device and steals
important information about a person or organization without

78
KHALIQ VIRTUAL ACADEMY- Booklet for Computer Section (SST BPS16)

their consent and sends such information to another person or

organization. Spyware takes control over a mobile phone or
computer without the user's knowledge.
They capture information like web browsing history, e-mail
messages, usernames and passwords and online payment
information. Spyware can
come through cookies or even when we install software without
reading its terms and conditions. System monitors, cookies
