READING

Read the introduction to the unit 3 and pay attention to the

words in bold. Look up the meaning of words or phrases
that you don't understand.
Many people think climate is simply weather. This is not quite accurate. The weather is a condition at one particular time. A
region often experiences a range of weather from day to day. The climate is the average weather over a long period of time.

Climate patterns are shaped by many factors. Latitudes near the Equator are typically warmer. Land at lower elevations also
tends to be warmer. However, other factors create exceptions. The Earth’s rotation produces global prevailing winds. These
carry moisture from wet to dry areas. Similarly, currents carry worm ocean water to cooler regions. An area´s terrain also
affects how much wind and moisture it receives.

Climate change and global warming

Climate change

Wikipedia defines climate as follows:

Climate encompasses the statistics of temperature, humidity, atmospheric pressure, wind, rainfall, atmospheric particle count
and other meteorological elements in a given region over a long period of time. Climate can be contrasted to weather, which is
the present condition of these same elements and their variations over shorter time periods.

Climate may be inherently variable as evidenced by the irregularity of the seasons from one year to another. This variability is
normal and may remain partially understood. It is related to changes in ocean currents, volcanic eruptions, solar radiation and
other components of the climate system. In addition, our climate also has its extremes (such as floods, droughts, hail,
tornadoes and hurricanes), which can be devastating. However, in recent decades, a number of indicators and studies show
more and more evidence of climate warming across the globe. A disturbing phenomenon that challenges human habits and
activities which are responsible for greenhouse gas emissions.

The greenhouse effect

The greenhouse effect is the process by which absorption and emission of infrared radiation by gases in the atmosphere warm
a planet's lower atmosphere and surface. It was proposed by Joseph Fourier in 1824 and was first investigated quantitatively
by Svante Arrhenius in 1896.

Naturally occurring greenhouse gases have a mean warming effect of about 33 °C (59 °F). But Human activity since the
Industrial Revolution has increased the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, leading to increased radiative forcing
from CO2, methane, tropospheric ozone, CFCs (chlorofluorocarbon) and nitrous oxide. The concentrations of CO2 and
methane have increased by 36% and 148% respectively since 1750. These levels are much higher than at any time during the
last 650,000 years, the period for which reliable data has been extracted from ice cores. Over the last three decades of the
20th century, GDP (Gross Domestic Product) per capita and population growth were the main drivers of increases in
greenhouse gas emissions. CO2 emissions are continuing to rise due to the burning of fossil fuels and land-use change.

Consequences of global warming

There are two major effects of global warming: the increase of temperature on the earth by about 3° to 5° C (5.4° to 9°
Fahrenheit) by the year 2100 and Rise of sea levels by at least 25 meters (82 feet) by the year 2100. Other consequences are
listed below:

Sea levels are rising due to thermal expansion of the ocean, in addition to melting of land ice.
Amounts and patterns of precipitation are changing.
The total annual power of hurricanes has already increased markedly since 1975 because their average intensity and
average duration have increased.
Changes in temperature and precipitation patterns increase the frequency, duration, and intensity of other extreme
weather events, such as floods, droughts, heat waves, and tornadoes.
Higher or lower agricultural yields, further glacial retreat, reduced summer stream flows, species extinctions.
Diseases like malaria are returning into areas where they have been extinguished earlier.

What are causes and effects of climate change?

Humans are increasingly influencing the climate and the earth's temperature by burning fossil fuels, cutting down forests and
farming livestock. This adds enormous amounts of greenhouse gases to those naturally occurring in the atmosphere,
increasing the greenhouse effect and global warming.

The evidence is clear: the main cause of climate change is burning fossil fuels such as oil, gas, and coal. When burnt, fossil
fuels release carbon dioxide into the air, causing the planet to heat up.

Humans and wild animals face new challenges for survival because of climate change. More frequent and intense drought,
storms, heat waves, rising sea levels, melting glaciers and warming oceans can directly harm animals, destroy the places they
live, and wreak havoc on people's livelihoods and communities.
Forests are some of the best "natural climate solutions" we have on this planet. If we can slow or stop deforestation and
manage natural land so that it is healthy, we could achieve up to one third of the emission reductions needed by 2030 to keep
global temperatures from rising more than 2°C (3.6°C)

C (3,6 ° C).

Paul: So have you seen all these freakish weather events on the news all around the world?

Aimee: Yeah, yeah. I'm trying to pay attention, yeah. It's been pretty bad in some places. I think, it's been the wettest January on record
in the UK at the moment.
Paul: Right, right, right. So do you think it's kind of indicative of climate change? Are you a climate change believer or a climate change
denier?

Aimee: I think it's hard to deny really. I think what humans do to the planet is going to have some effect and science is science, you
know. It's backed up by evidence and facts and scientists don't tend to say things until they know it's true or as true as it can be. So
yeah, I'm definitely a believer in climate change, I think. We are affecting things on the planet.

How about you?

Paul: I've read quite a lot about it. And yes, there is a science to support it but there's also a lot of science to — not to deny it but there's
definitely a lot of questions that aren't answered yet. It's a very sort of complex issue. I mean, these global systems of weather and
you've got all these like organic processes going on that we just don't really understand. And then trying to explain all these complex
events by saying it's climate change, it's…

I mean, what worries me is that by denying it, it seems to also be a sort of justification for us to continue living the way we are, which
worries me a lot. Whether it's true or not, I think we need to be thinking about how we can live better. And that means, living in ways that
are less, sort of, damaging on our environment.

Aimee: Yeah, I agree. I agree. I've also read a bit about weather systems that are perhaps not—because of climate of change, every
planet has weather systems that come and go. And I understand that part but I also fully agree that we have to stop being so
destructive.

I think it's pretty clear. You can't continue cutting down acres and acres and acres of really valuable resources like the rainforest. I
mean, we need that to breathe, so it just doesn't make sense. Yeah, I think we definitely have to stop being so destructive.
