Future Vision of Informatics

Future Vision of Informatics The document discusses the future vision of informatics in nursing practice. It states that informatics aims to use information and technology to improve healthcare delivery, outcomes, and patient care. Increased informatics usage is making informatics competency a requirement for nurses. The future of informatics involves integrated health systems, interoperability, clinical decision support, telehealth, patient engagement/empowerment, data analytics, education, cybersecurity, and collaboration. Smooth integration of systems and adequate sharing of patient data between sites of care will be important. Future Vision of Informatics

Informatics in nursing practice aims to harness information and technology to support

efficient healthcare delivery, improved outcomes, and better patient care. Increased informatics

usage for improving care quality and patient safety makes informatics competency a compulsory

nursing requirement (Sewell, 2018). Nurse informatics competence is dependent on computer

skills, self-efficacy, evidence-based practice, and duration spent on hospital information systems.

Basic computer skills taught to developing nurses, as well as informatics education programs

incorporated into the curriculum, will help to increase nurses’ informatics competency.

According to Sewell (2018), integrated health information systems, interoperability, clinical

decision support, remote and telehealth monitoring, patient empowerment and engagement, data

analytics for population health, training and education, cyber security and data privacy, and

interprofessional collaboration are some aspects of the future of informatics in nursing practice.

Smooth integration of health information systems with adequate sharing of patient data

between different sites of care. These include electronic health records, telehealth systems, and

any other technology associated with health care. Additionally, interoperability is important in

relaying information between various healthcare systems and platforms. A healthcare ecosystem

is envisaged in the future that enables data flow among information systems enhancing the

communication between the healthcare professionals. Improved clinical decision support tools

for nurse’s informed decision-making at the point of patient care (Kleib et al., 2021). Some of

these tools can use AI and machine learning to process patient data and give relevant advice.

Also enhanced use of telehealth services in conducting remote consultations, monitoring home-

based patients, and providing care to people in rural or underdeveloped settings. With remote

monitoring technologies, nurses will no longer have to do many face-to-face visits to measure
patients’ vital signs and health states. Empowerment technologies for informed patients. This

involves patient portals, health apps, and other technologies that enable people to get their health

information, talk to doctors, and monitor their health themselves. Secondly, by using big data

and analytics to detect trends, patterns, and insights at the mass level.

Nursing informatics is vital in the health promotion and management of the population by

using information to analyze health risks, allocating resources efficiently, and designing

intervention programs. Informatics integration into nursing curricula, to prepare nurses who will

be technologically advanced in practice (Abdekhoda, 2021). It involves orientating the nurses on

EHRs, data security, and other health information technology relevant to them. The other issue

that needs to be addressed is the incorporation of strong means to guarantee the safety and

confidentiality of patient information. As we heavily rely on digital platforms, making the

information of patients safe from cybersecurity threats is crucial as far as trust in the healthcare

systems is concerned. Therefore, evidence-based nursing care is an inventive, modern, and

skillful approach that contributes to improving the clinical practice of nurses. These fundamental

components and underlying framework on which the evidence-based practice relies in nursing

are informatics and computer skills. Therefore, the importance of nurses’ health informatics

literacy in increasing evidence-based practice in nursing is emphasized. Thus, health informatics

literacy ought to be viewed as an important aspect of the training of nurses. Lastly, ensuring an

interoperable system will help improve efficiency by enhancing communication and

collaboration between various kinds of healthcare workers. It entails enhanced communication

between the nurses, physicians, pharmacists, and other health workers in the community. In

summary, the vision for the future use of informatics in nursing practice involves utilizing

technology to improve the quality of care provided and the health outcomes for individuals and
populations. With the advancement of technology, nursing informatics will be a key driving

force that will shape the healthcare sector.
