A monument to fame
American entertainers know they have made it to the top when they get a star on the
Hollywood Walk of Fame. This 2.1-kilometre section of road is located in the Hollywood
district of Los Angeles, California. The Walk features more than 2,640 stars which have
been built into the pavement on both sides of Hollywood Boulevard. The five-point stars are
made from a pink stone-like material called terrazzo and have brass edges. 1_____
When the Walk of Fame was first launched in March 1960, stars were granted in only four
categories: Motion Pictures, Television, Recording or Music and Radio. 2_____ Nearly half
of all the stars have been awarded in the Motion Picture category, and just under a quarter
in television. Approximately twenty new stars are given each year.
Anyone can apply for a star, but an application will only be considered if the person has
been famous for at least five years. The applicant must include a written statement
confirming that he or she actually wants a star. 3_____ In addition, they have to pay a fee of
$40,000 for the star to be made and for its future maintenance. Those who are successful
have five years to schedule their ceremonies and issue invitations to their guests.
4
_____ The person with the most stars is Gene Autry, the ‘Singing Cowboy’, who has a star
in all five. Indiana Jones actor Harrison Ford appears to have two stars, but one of these
belongs to a silent film actor who shared his name. Even fictional celebrities like Mickey
Mouse, Snow White and Shrek have been granted stars.
