SECTION A (READING) 20 MARKS

Note: Section A tests the candidate’s ability in reading only. Therefore, no


deductions are to be made for errors in spelling, grammar or punctuation.
Marks should be awarded if the answer can be clearly understood.

Objective: This section evaluates the reading and comprehension skills of


the students and their ability to infer and evaluate the given information.

1. COMPUTERS MARKS–8

Objective: To identify the main points of a text


Marking: 8 marks – 1 mark for each correct answer
1.1 Sentence Completion

Answers :
a) invention of computers
b) solve mathematical problems / put thousands of unrelated facts in order
c) provide information on the best way to prevent traffic jams / used in
industries / used in universities / carry out complicated work in all
branches of learning ( any one).

Objective : To identify the main points of a text

Marking : 8 marks - 2 marks for each correct answer

Suggested Value Points


Reasons:
Lack of civic sense, insensitive public , callous and lazy attitude f people ,
lack of awareness among the public, poor infrastructure , lack of funds and
no penalty .  

Measures to make it a success :
To sensitize people on the importance of cleanliness and hygiene through
awareness programmes , like rallies, street plays, electronic and print media ,
active participation of community and school.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR – Influence of friends

Objective : To use the given input in a short sustained piece of


writing

Marking : Content - 3 marks (the given information in the question


paper to be included)
Format – include date, subject addressee and closing.
Format to be treated as part of the content
Expression- 2 marks (fluency and accuracy to
be taken into account)

Positive Impact :
Friendship - valuable relationship
Influence: establishes a bond , companionship , sharing problems, healthy
competition among peers, boosts happiness , reduces stress , a friend in

Making use of time in a productive way, learning from each other, taking up
some projects and social work , encouraging each other and being
supportive

Marking : Relevance of content + creativity – 6 marks

Story completed in any suitable way , using the hints
provided should be accepted.

5. GAP FILLING – MARKS-3

Objective : To use grammatical items correctly

Marking : 1 mark for each correct answer

interpretation and comprehension.

POETRY – THE RIME OF THE ANCIENT MARINER

e) The Ancient Mariner had killed the harmless albatross , that had got them
out of the land of ice and snow. As a result they had to undergo a lot of
sufferings. ( their examples)

Gogon Pakrashi was Patol Babu mentor . He had advised that however
small the role may be , a good actor should give full attention to it as every
word in a play is important - nothing beneath one’s dignity - make use of
every opportunity – do full justice to the role - work done with perfection
gives satisfaction.

POETRY - SNAKE

‘Snakes – a beautiful creation of God , an object of our love and not hatred.

 graceful , majestic looking


 some people think some snakes are poisonous , so should be killed.
 king in exile / lord of life
 arouses a sense of admiration
 man’s duty to respect and protect the rights of other creatures
 co-exist in harmony
 many superstitions attached to it.

Objective : To understand and relate to the prescribed text and be


able to make an analysis of events and characters.
Marking: Content: 5 marks Expression: 5 marks

Answers :

Helen Keller’s embittered childhood – illness – deaf , dumb and blind – led
to tantrums and frustration - outbursts of passion - short- tempered ,
problems at school.
Helen overcame this after Anne Sullivan’s arrival – Miss Sullivan –
embodiment of love , understanding , patience and perseverance - Helen
conquered her handicaps due to her determination and her love for nature
– communicated with others – broke barriers – aspired for higher goals -
supportive parents and friends – self -reliant – no more a burden – not
defeated in life – learnt to read , write and speak

OR

Undying spirit, never dwelt on her handicaps , had patience , perseverance ,


determination and self- confidence - not defeated in life – small and steady
steps towards her destination – the more she attained - the higher she
aspired , gave the world the lesson of optimism and positivity – inspired
readers and others similarly disadvantaged .

OR

Anne’s resentment due to the strange circumstances she was in – confined


to a small place with fear being her constant companion - initially mother
was jovial – teased her about her boyfriend - praised her for her school
reports but later Anne did not like to be treated like a baby – did not want
to be sermonized - felt that her mother was not an ideal mother who
would support her emotionally - felt mother was more fond of her sister -
blamed Anne for everything - jealous of her father’s attention to her mother
- mother’s sarcasm - lack of sweetness - accusations affected her so did
not confide in her

OR

Father was caring , gentle , modest , peace maker , wanted the best for his
daughters - wanted Anne to be happy , more tolerant of her, imposed less
restrictions and gave her more freedom - not bothered about their reports -
defended her - patient, considerate - Anne learned self- control from her
father .
