Q3 ’22 Gaming Industry Preview – Headwinds Remain in

Ahead of Q3 ’22 earnings season, we take the opportunity to frame some of the key Eric Sheridan

pandemic (across PC, console and mobile gaming). In particular, the disconnect Goldman Sachs & Co. LLC

between the depth of the current console cycle (despite entering the 3rd year)
continues to act as a potential forward catalyst against a backdrop of
delayed/deferred publishing content in the coming years. In terms of lapping the
effects of the pandemic’s stay-at-home dynamic, the industry (based on 3rd party
data) could be emerging from tougher comps and be set up for a mixture of better
(non-mobile) revenue performance ahead. We remain cognizant that the
macroeconomic environment remains volatile (especially with respect to consumer
spending) but would characterize the industry’s historical precedent as more
recession resilient than recession proof in the coming quarters. Lastly, we see
mobile gaming trends as a continued headwind to results in 2H ’22 as the industry
continues to absorb the double headwinds of the surge in pandemic gaming habits
(user & monetization growth) and the growth impacts of Apple’s iOS privacy changes
in July 2021. On this past point, our digital advertising checks point to some signs of
growing optimism that Apple’s imminent SK Ad Network 4.0 iteration could aid in

improving measurement/attribution and with it improve the mobile app economy
advertising landscape.

As we move past 2022 into the next few years, we see a couple of key industry
themes emerging: 1) easier comps as such user growth/engagement trends are
lapped and the industry resumes more normalized growth dynamics (link to
resumption of coverage of Japan’s games, entertainment, & internet sector); 2) the
industry moves to raise the level of mobile gaming exposure into the category that
should provide above industry wide growth in the coming years; & 3) the console
cycle (now in its 3rd year) finally seeing a catch up trade in 2023 in terms of units as
global chip and supply/logistic headwinds begin to abate – with early evidence that
next gen consoles are following a normalized pattern of producing increased
software IP monetization in terms of attach rate. In this earnings preview for the

Forward Pipeline Remains Robust

Ninth Console Cycle Expected to Surpass Prior Cycle By 2025

Coming out of the pandemic, there has been a focus on how the console cycle is
evolving for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S as investors expect AAA publishers to
hold off on releasing key premium titles (with the exception of annual sports franchises)
until there is a large enough installed base. Given the lack of disclosure around Xbox
consoles, we assess how Sony’s PlayStation 5 (release date Nov 2020) has performed
relative to PlayStation 4 (release date Nov 2013). As can be seen below, the PlayStation
5 has sold less units on a cumulative basis compared to PlayStation 4 during the same
timeframe given supply constraints tied to the pandemic as the PlayStation 5 was
released in November 2020. With this, there has also been a lower cumulative tie-ratio
to date as AAA publishers have delayed premium titles, with management teams citing

production delays related to COVID and longer development cycles to take advantage of
advanced technology with the new generation of consoles. Goldman Sachs’ Sony
analyst Minami Munakata forecasts PlayStation 5 being on par with PlayStation 4
sell-through by 2024 and expects the cumulative tie ratio (software units per hardware)
to be in line with PlayStation 4 by 2023, indicating that AAA publishers will be releasing
more premium titles in 2023 and beyond

While the 9th generation of consoles still lags behind the 8th generation (in terms of
lifetime units on a comparative basis), AAA publishers’ pipeline remains robust for the
remainder of the year with key titles (that are not on an annual cadence) being:
Overwatch 2 (ATVI), Skull and Bones (UBI), and Star Wars Jedi: Survivor (EA; we note
it’s been slated for CY2023 so TBD on whether it will fall within FY23 or FY24). Of note,
Ubisoft recently pushed Skull and Bones to 3/9/2023 (from prior 11/8/2022) with
management highlighting the extra time being allocated towards polishing the game and
incorporating players’ feedback from their open beta. Despite the game being pushed
back to the very end of UBI’s FY23, management reiterated its FY22-23 financial
targets.

Spend & Engagement Continue to Decline But Point to Recovering Trends

As can be seen below in Exhibit 4, US video game sales continued to decline in July and
August 2022, but point to improving trends since the beginning of the year. Within total
US video game sales, hardware exhibited healthy double-digit growth in July and August
as the latest consoles continue to see adoption. While Sony has raised prices for their
PlayStation 5 by ~$50 in various regions, we note that the US has not yet experienced
the price increase. Looking at content and accessories, both segments were down YoY

Formula 1 22 both ranked within the top 10. For August, EA’s Madden NFL 23 ranked #5
while ATVI’s Call of Duty: Vanguard dropped to #7. However, we note that the monthly
rankings are highly dependent on timing of release. In addition, the below exhibit is
tracking unit sales for the US only and with that, there are certain titles that
over/under-index to the US (e.g., Madden vs. FIFA). Looking at the last twelve months,
ATVI and UBI both have 1 title within the top 10 while EA has 3 (Madden NFL 22,
Battlefield 2042, FIFA 22) - typically the top 10 (LTM) are fairly stable while monthly
rankings can be fairly volatile given the release schedule.

To provide a quarterly health check of gaming user growth and engagement, we

leverage trends from Steam (the leading online digital PC games marketplace) and
Twitch (the leading live gaming streaming platform) - we believe these data points are
useful for flagging inflection points in overall engagement trends. As can be seen below,
Steam’s peak concurrent users realized recovering trends during Q3. While Twitch
viewership hours continue to decline YoY, we note that engagement has been improving
from Q2 levels (or more specifically May (18)% YoY).

Mobile Gaming Data Indicates Continued Declines in Q3

To provide a quarterly health check of mobile gaming user growth and engagement, we
leverage Sensor Tower data to track iOS & Android app downloads, users, and

engagement across major publishers and markets. We believe these data points are
useful for flagging inflection points in region-specific and overall engagement trends.
Broadly speaking, we have seen the global gaming market struggle this year as macro
pressures weigh on the consumer and data shows YoY revenues declines every month
this year. On a geographic level, over the past several years we have noticed large
momentum in Asia and LatAm. We use app downloads as a proxy for market share and
note that Asia has increased share from 35% in 1Q18 to 42% in 3Q22 (and LatAm from
17% to 21% during that same time period). More recently, all regions have seen YoY
declines in app downloads in Q3’22 as the mobile environment remains challenged
amidst the macroeconomic uncertainty.

We, Eric Sheridan, Lane Czura and Sarah Boulos, hereby certify that all of the views expressed in this report accurately reflect our personal views about
the subject company or companies and its or their securities. We also certify that no part of our compensation was, is or will be, directly or indirectly,

GS Factor Profile
The Goldman Sachs Factor Profile provides investment context for a stock by comparing key attributes to the market (i.e. our coverage universe) and its
sector peers. The four key attributes depicted are: Growth, Financial Returns, Multiple (e.g. valuation) and Integrated (a composite of Growth, Financial
Returns and Multiple). Growth, Financial Returns and Multiple are calculated by using normalized ranks for specific metrics for each stock. The
normalized ranks for the metrics are then averaged and converted into percentiles for the relevant attribute. The precise calculation of each metric may
vary depending on the fiscal year, industry and region, but the standard approach is as follows:
Growth is based on a stock’s forward-looking sales growth, EBITDA growth and EPS growth (for financial stocks, only EPS and sales growth), with a
higher percentile indicating a higher growth company. Financial Returns is based on a stock’s forward-looking ROE, ROCE and CROCI (for financial
stocks, only ROE), with a higher percentile indicating a company with higher financial returns. Multiple is based on a stock’s forward-looking P/E, P/B,
price/dividend (P/D), EV/EBITDA, EV/FCF and EV/Debt Adjusted Cash Flow (DACF) (for financial stocks, only P/E, P/B and P/D), with a higher percentile
indicating a stock trading at a higher multiple. The Integrated percentile is calculated as the average of the Growth percentile, Financial Returns
percentile and (100% - Multiple percentile).
For the exclusive use of [email protected]

Financial Returns and Multiple use the Goldman Sachs analyst forecasts at the fiscal year-end at least three quarters in the future. Growth uses inputs
for the fiscal year at least seven quarters in the future compared with the year at least three quarters in the future (on a per-share basis for all metrics).
For a more detailed description of how we calculate the GS Factor Profile, please contact your GS representative.

M&A Rank
Across our global coverage, we examine stocks using an M&A framework, considering both qualitative factors and quantitative factors (which may vary
across sectors and regions) to incorporate the potential that certain companies could be acquired. We then assign a M&A rank as a means of scoring
companies under our rated coverage from 1 to 3, with 1 representing high (30%-50%) probability of the company becoming an acquisition target, 2
representing medium (15%-30%) probability and 3 representing low (0%-15%) probability. For companies ranked 1 or 2, in line with our standard
departmental guidelines we incorporate an M&A component into our target price. M&A rank of 3 is considered immaterial and therefore does not
factor into our price target, and may or may not be discussed in research.

Quantum
Quantum is Goldman Sachs’ proprietary database providing access to detailed financial statement histories, forecasts and ratios. It can be used for
in-depth analysis of a single company, or to make comparisons between companies in different sectors and markets.

Ratings, coverage universe and related definitions

Buy (B), Neutral (N), Sell (S) Analysts recommend stocks as Buys or Sells for inclusion on various regional Investment Lists. Being assigned a Buy or
Sell on an Investment List is determined by a stock’s total return potential relative to its coverage universe. Any stock not assigned as a Buy or a Sell on
an Investment List with an active rating (i.e., a stock that is not Rating Suspended, Not Rated, Coverage Suspended or Not Covered), is deemed
Neutral. Each region’s Investment Review Committee manages Regional Conviction lists, which represent investment recommendations focused on
the size of the total return potential and/or the likelihood of the realization of the return across their respective areas of coverage. The addition or
removal of stocks from such Conviction lists do not represent a change in the analysts’ investment rating for such stocks.
Total return potential represents the upside or downside differential between the current share price and the price target, including all paid or
anticipated dividends, expected during the time horizon associated with the price target. Price targets are required for all covered stocks. The total
return potential, price target and associated time horizon are stated in each report adding or reiterating an Investment List membership.
Coverage Universe: A list of all stocks in each coverage universe is available by primary analyst, stock and coverage universe at
https://www.gs.com/research/hedge.html.
Not Rated (NR). The investment rating, target price and earnings estimates (where relevant) have been suspended pursuant to Goldman Sachs policy
