WHY DO WE DRAW??????
HOW DO WE DRAW???
Copyright © 2021. Romuald Titus O. Romero, Drawing 1. All rights reserved. Authored and Prepared by : Tito Romero
Drawing dates back to pre-historic era when it was the
only form of communication between humans. Hence, it
is through drawings that we study our history. These
drawings have been found everywhere. From vases to
walls of tombs, to walls of houses, pots, anything! And
now, in the present time, this medium of drawing is
more polished, more advanced and more intelligent.
And the medium of communication that uses drawing is
definitely a lot more than what humans use before.

So what skills do we need to develop if we continue on pursuing
our passion for drawing? Here are some skills you need to
develop if you want to be good in drawing:

2.Set the right proportions and sizes:
When you want to learn sketching or drawing,
you need to know about the proportions and
sizes. The focus here is to see the perspective.
This is one of the basics and essential as it will
help you to understand drawing in-depth.
Further, you will be able to draw multiple plans
and put in more objects on the page. Most
importantly, you must know the concept of
proportions in order to draw a 3D image. If you
want to practice it, then first try drawing shapes
like spheres, cubes and when you have
experience in that then sketch some furniture
pieces. The best would be if you try to sketch in
3D view.

3.Know different colour schemes:
Apart from knowing the right proportions and
edges, another important aspect of drawing is
colours. The basics of different colour schemes
are important when you draw a concept on a
paper. Some colours go well together, while
some may not go well. So, learning about the
emotions of colour will enable you to create a
drawing that send an emotional message. You
can learn more about it by reading our blogs on
it.

4.Understand the Concept of
light and shadow:
Drawing involves some essential
techniques that you can master
only when you learn about them
in detail. The concept and
understanding of shadows and
lighting are just like a helping tool
that will take your art to a new
level. If you are aware of the right
use of shadows then you can
easily make a 2D object appear to
be 3D. Therefore, by using proper
light and shadow, you can
completely change the
perception of painting. Here are
https://i.pinimg.com/originals/7d/1a/60/7d1a60f275d8faf8b1f5ddf85bd78212.jpg some of the points that you can
use while using the concept of
shadow:

•You can make more
characters of the drawing
appear on a scene like a wall.
This will enhance the overall
look.
•Shadows also help you to
bring out the exact look of the
material of the objects present
on the drawing.
•Darkening the edges or using
shadows of the objects
enhances the power of colours
used in the drawing. https://i.pinimg.com/originals/af/bf/9b/afbf9b3592160d6ab14a328f8d0c4326.png
•It provides the perspective of
the drawing. Hence, now you
can look at your drawing from
another perspective.

5.Convey clear perspective:
The main motto behind any art is to
communicate emotions. Drawing is a
form of art that does this very well. It
may communicate about any feeling,
ideas or anything else that you want to
convey. Many people may not
consider this part as that important
but in reality, this is the most
important aspect. Your drawing is the
end message that you send and this is
the thing that is going to make your https://i.ytimg.com/vi/FeUaC9cOjEg/maxresdefault.jpg

Principles of
02 Design
Quick review

The principles of
design represent how the artist
uses the elements of art to
create an effect and to help
convey the artist's intent. The
principles of art and design are
balance, contrast, emphasis,
movement, pattern, rhythm,
and unity/variety. The use of
these principles can help
determine whether a painting
is successful, and whether or
not the painting is finished. The https://encrypted-
principles of design describe tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcSVW3

Balance refers to the visual weight of
the elements of the composition. It is a
sense that the painting feels stable
and "feels right." Imbalance causes a
feeling of discomfort in the viewer.
Balance can be achieved in 3 different
https://www.kwikkopy.com.au/wp- ways:
content/uploads/2014/11/Balance.png 1.Symmetry - in which both sides of a
composition have the same elements
in the same position, as in a mirror-
image, or the two sides of a face.
2.Asymmetry - in which the
composition is balanced due to the
contrast of any of the elements of art.
For example, a large circle on one side

of a composition might be balanced by

are equally spaced around a central
point, as in the spokes coming out of

Contrast is the difference between elements of
art in a composition, such that each element is
made stronger in relation to the other. When
placed next to each other, contrasting elements
command the viewer's attention. Areas of
contrast are among the first places that a
viewer's eye is drawn. Contrast can be achieved
by juxtapositions of any of the elements of
art. Negative/Positive space is an example of
contrast. Complementary colors placed side by
side is an example of contrast. Notan is an
example of contrast.

Notan is a Japanese term which
literally means "light dark
harmony". Artists use "notan
studies" to explore different
arrangements of light and dark
elements in a painting, without
having the distraction of other
elements like color, texture and
finer details.
In practice, this involves painting

the darks with black and the lights
with white (known as a 2 value
notan). Sometimes, gray is also
used as an intermediate value (3 or
4 value notans). A notan with more
than 4 values is pretty much just a
value study.
Here is an example of a 2 value
notan study of James Whistler and
Claude Monet’s painting.

Emphasis is when the artist creates an area of
the composition that is visually dominant and
commands the viewer's attention. This is often
achieved by contrast.

Movement is the result of using the elements of
art such that they move the viewer's eye around
and within the image. A sense of movement can
be created by diagonal or curvy lines, either real
or implied, by edges, by the illusion of space, by
repetition, by energetic mark-making.

Pattern is the uniform repetition of any of the
elements of art or any combination
thereof. Anything can be turned into a pattern
through repetition. Some classic patterns are
spirals, grids, weaves.

Rhythm is created by movement implied
through the repetition of elements of art in a
non-uniform but organized way. It is related to
rhythm in music. Unlike pattern, which demands
consistency, rhythm relies on variety.

Unity/Variety You
want your painting
to feel unified such
that all the elements
fit together
comfortably. Too
much unity creates
monotony, too much
variety creates chaos.
You need both.
Ideally, you want
areas of interest in
your composition
along with places for
your eye to rest.

Element of
Art
Quick Review
Copyright © 2021. Romuald Titus O. Romero, Drawing 1. All rights reserved. Authored and Prepared by : Tito Romero
In order to understand any field, it's important to
have a solid foundation from which to grow. For
visual art, this means understanding
the elements of art. These creative building
blocks are essential and having a grasp on how
they work is important both for artists and for
lovers of art. By gaining a deeper understanding
of the elements of art, it's easier to analyze,
unravel, and create any type of artwork from
painting and photography to sculpture and
architecture.
In fact, many of these elements are taught to
schoolchildren as part of basic art education. But
while the concepts may seem simple, once
mastered they can stretch and grow in all
directions, no matter what style of art is being
created or appreciated. The elements of art are

concrete visual components that work in tandem boost.jpeg?fit=960%2C540&ssl=1
with principals of art that organize and harmonize
them.

Line, color, shape, form, value, space, and texture
are the seven core elements of art and they often
overlap and inform one another. Whether talking
about drawing, painting, sculpture, or design,
these components of art all need to be taken
into consideration.

SHAPE
The result of closed lines, shapes are two-
dimensional, flat, and only have height and
width. Geometric shapes like circles and squares
are mathematical and precise, while organic
shapes take cues from nature and tend to be
curved and abstract. Henri Matisse‘s collage art
makes great use of organic shapes, while Piet
Mondrian is known for relying on geometric
shapes in his paintings. Shapes can be used to
control how we perceive a composition. For
instance, triangles can help draw the eye to a
particular point, while circles represent
continuity.

TEXTURE
Texture is an element of art that also plays to our
sense of touch. It's defined as a description of the
way something feels or looks like it would feel.
Sometimes we're speaking about an actual
texture that can be felt, as in the case of Icelandic
artist Hrafnhildur Arnardóttir, who
creates installation art using synthetic hair. Other
times, the texture is an implied visual texture
that is two-dimensional. Smooth, rough, hard,
soft, furry, fluffy, and bumpy are just some
different textures that evoke different responses.
For instance, an artist look for a hyper realistic
result would want clouds to appear fluffy, while
another artist wishing to subvert conventions
might play with texture to create a surreal https://i.redd.it/w23jidsk7qox.jpg
experience for the viewer. 19th-century sculptor
Antonio Corradini was a master of this, as
exemplified by his sculpture of a veiled woman,
it's hard to believe that it's made out of marble.

Warm Up
04 Exercises/
Activity
Studio Work
Copyright © 2021. Romuald Titus O. Romero, Drawing 1. All rights reserved. Authored and Prepared by : Tito Romero
Doing some simple training exercises before you bring
out the fancy paper and start to create your next
masterpiece can make all the difference to your work, I
promise.
First of all it’ll warm up your body, specifically those
parts you need for drawing, like your fingers, wrist,
shoulder. Your line work will be much more secure after
a few minutes of practice. Secondly, it’ll give your brain
some time to change gears, so to speak.

The basic craft of drawing is about two things: you learn to control your hand and to see.
The following exercises/activity will help you with your hand dexterity and control. You may
cheat if you want to but that will not help you learn to control your hand. The basic problem of
most artists is that they always have an idea but they do not know how to translate that idea
into their drawing. Because they lack the most basic of all, control of their hand.

Exercise 1: Circles — more is more!
Distribute circles of various sizes on a piece of paper
until the paper is filled. Make sure the circles do not
overlap. On a piece of bond paper, divide it into four
parts and inside each rectangle, try to fill up that
rectangle with various sizes of circles.

Drawing circles is not as easy as you
might think. Notice how the circles
become harder, the bigger you make
them? Try them in both directions —
and make lots of them.
Tip: Shake your hand when it starts
cramping! This is a workout for our
hands after all.

Exercise 2: Line Drawing — the joy of structure
Fill a piece of paper with parallel lines.
Copyright © 2021. Romuald Titus O. Romero, Drawing 1. All rights reserved. Authored and Prepared by : Tito Romero
On a piece of bond paper, make 5 rows of rectangles and divide each row into 9 sections.
Then try to draw lines with a gradient value starting from a blank white square to a very dark square
using only lines and pencil pressure to create the value as shown in the example I showed you earlier.
Do not do any hatching lines yet, just straight line:
1) Up to down motion
2) Left to right motion
3) Diagonal left to right motion
4) Diagonal right to left motion
