CHAPTER 1: Using DataView® with Instruments
®
As stated previously, DataView performs two main tasks, one of which is the analysis and display of recorded data. The other is instrument
configuration and control. Control of an instrument is performed via the control panel dialog box.

1.1 Connecting to an Instrument

®
At this point, return to the Quick Start dialog box either by selecting Quick Start from the File menu, or by restarting DataView . Next, select the
Open Instrument Control Panel button. At this point the Connection dialog box will be displayed (see figure 1).

Figure 1
The Connection dialog box allows you to specify the communication port and data transfer rate to be used during this session.
Select the communication port from the Communication Port drop down list. Then select the data transfer rate from the Communication Rate
drop down list. Once the port and data rate has been specified, click on the Start button. Click the Cancel button if you decide not to establish a
connection at this time. When the OK button is selected the Select Instrument dialog box will be display (see figure 2 below).

Figure 2
The Select Instrument dialog box is used to identify an attached instrument. When first displayed it attempts to automatically identify the
instrument. If it is able to identify the attached instrument (using the previously specified communication parameters) it will automatically close and
proceed with the appropriate operation.
While displayed the Select Instrument dialog box will continuously try to identify the attached instrument. Cycling between all know instrument
types. The dialog box will remain displayed until the attached instrument is identified or until the OK button or Cancel button is selected.
If the Select Instrument dialog box is unable to identify the attached instrument it will remain displayed, in which case you must manually select
the desired instrument.
At this point the Control Panel specific to the attached instrument should be displayed. Next proceed to the section corresponding to the instrument
®
you will be using DataView to communicate with.

displayed to allow you to verify and possibly change the date and time that the instrument’s clock will be set to.
• Clear Memory: erases all test measurement data currently stored in the instrument. When this button is selected you will be asked to verify
that the operation should proceed.
• Download: transfers test measurement data stored in the instrument to the computer. This measurement data is then saved into a database
of your choosing.
Once the instrument configuration has been defined, select the Write button.
The configuration will be transferred to the instrument and the dialog will close returning you to the Control Panel (if that is where you opened the
dialog from). If you decide not to send the configuration to the instrument, select the Close button and the dialog box will close without updating the
instrument.
®
Selecting the Read button will cause DataView to read the configuration in the attached instrument. When the Configure option is selected from
the control panel, the Configure Instrument dialog is automatically initialized to the configuration of the attached instrument. Although, if you modify
the channels and later decide to reset them or the Configure dialog was opened from the Instrument menu, selecting the Read button will reset the
settings to that contained in the attached instrument.
®

2.3 Running a Megohmmeter Test

With the instrument connected to the computer and the Megohmmeter Control Panel dialog box open, connect the test leads of the instrument to a
device to be tested. Refer to the instrument User’s Guide for information about connecting the test leads.
Select a test operation by clicking on one of the Test Operation radio buttons. Then begin the test by selecting the Start button.
The Megohmmeter Transfer dialog box will be displayed. This dialog box sends the commands to the attached instrument instructing it to begin
the selected operation. While a test is running the Start button will become the Stop button. This button has a dual purpose the function being
determined by the current run state of the instrument (provided that state was set from the control panel). Pressing the Stop (originally Start) button
will terminate the running test. While a test is running the Clear, Save, Configure and Download buttons are disabled.
As the test progresses test status and measurement values will be displayed in the control panel’s status window. In addition a trend graph will be
displayed after 10 seconds provided your running one of the meg-ohm tests. Each point on the graph represents a 5-second interval. The trace
requires 2 points before the line can be drawn. This is why it takes 10 seconds before the trend graph is displayed.
The test will automatically terminate after the test run time has elapsed. The run time is specified in the instrument’s configuration. After the test
has terminated (automatically or through manual selection of the Stop button) the Save button will be enabled. The Save button is enabled
whenever the dialog box contains test measurements that can be saved.

2.4 Saving Received Measurements

Real-time measurement data received from an instrument can be saved directly into a recording session database. This differs from the process of
downloading and saving recorded data, in that the measurements are stored directly in the Control Panel and not via the instruments recording
memory.
Measurement data is stored by selecting the Save button in the Megohmmeter C.A 6543/1060 Control Panel dialog box. This dialog button is
disabled when the dialog contains no measurement data. The transfer of real-time measurement data occurs once a test has been started via the
Start button of the control panel. The Save button will be enabled when the test is stopped (pressing the Start button again) or when the test
automatically terminates (concludes the test duration).

®
Model C.A 6543/1060 Megohmmeter and DataView 7
Save the real-time measurements by selecting the Save button in the control panel.
When the Save button is selected, a dialog box will be displayed asking for the name of the database to save the measurement data into (see
figure 5).

Figure 5
Specify the name of the database file by typing it into the File name field or by selecting one from the displayed list.
You can also select an alternate directory by traversing the displayed directory tree. If you decide not to save the measured data, select the Cancel
button and the dialog box will close and you will be returned to the control panel.
Select the Save button.
If the specified database exists, a dialog box will be displayed asking if you wish to overwrite it. If you do not want the specified database to be
overwritten, select the No button. You can then start over and specify another database name. If you want to overwrite the database file, select the
Yes button.

2.5 Downloading Recorded Data

Recorded measurements stored in the instrument are transferred to a database on the PC via the Download command.
Before proceeding run one or more tests from the instruments from panel and save the results in the instruments memory. Refer to the instruments
documentation on how to perform these operations.
Select the Download button from either the Megohmmeter C.A 6543/1060 Control Panel or the Megohmmeter C.A 6543/1060 Setup dialog box.
This begins the transfer of recorded data into the PC. The download operation can be initiated from the main Instrument menu.
Once the download operation has been initiated a dialog displaying the transfer progress will be displayed (see figure 6).

Figure 6

®
8 Model C.A 6543/1060 Megohmmeter and DataView
Once a list of stored tests has been obtained the following dialog will be displayed.

Figure 7
This dialog box allows you to specify the tests to be downloaded.
Select the desired tests and select the Download button.
Multiple tests can be selected by holding down the Ctrl key and selected each test in turn. A range of tests can be selected by selecting the first
desired test. Then select the last desired test while holding down the Shift key.
At this point the download dialog will be displayed and will look similar to the following (depending on the tests selected for download).

Once the transfer is complete the Save As dialog box will be displayed. This dialog will be displayed once for each object set that has been saved
in the instrument. Test results are saved in the instrument under an Object number and Test number. The Object and Test numbers are specified
when the results are saved.
The title of the dialog indicates the object index and test operations that will be saved into this database. Each object set is saved into separate
database files.
In the Save As dialog box you specify the name of the database in which to save the recorded test set data. If a database exists with the name you
specify, a dialog asking if it should be overwritten will be displayed. Selecting the No button will display the Save As dialog box allowing you to
specify another database name. If you select the Yes button, the database will be over written. Selecting the Cancel button in the Save As dialog
box will cause the downloaded data to be discarded.
Specify a database name and select the Save button.

®
Model C.A 6543/1060 Megohmmeter and DataView 9
Once a database file name is specified, the Session Properties dialog box will be displayed (see figure 7).

Figure 7
This dialog box allows you to specify information about the recorded session. This information will be saved along with the recorded data. Selecting
the Make Default button will save the current field values making them the default for subsequent Session Properties dialog boxes.
Fill in the fields of this dialog box and select the OK button to accept the session information.
At this point DataView will start saving each of the individual test data sets. You will be prompted to specify and/or accept the name for each test as
it is saved (see figure 8).

Figure 8
The test name dialog box will be displayed once for each test being saved.
If more than one object test set has been saved in the instrument the previous process (starting with the database file name) will repeat for each of
the remaining test objects.
DataView saves each test object set into a separate database file. This allows you to give the database file a name that describes the object that
was tested. Within the database each test of that object is saved under a name of your choosing.
Specify or accept names for the test and select the OK button. Repeat this process for each test in the object set.
If the recorded data download is initiated via the Instrument menu, you will be asked to specify the display template to be attached to the data.
Select the template from the displayed list. The template will then be opened and the downloaded data displayed in the manner defined by the
template.
If the download is initiated via the control panel, you will be returned to the control panel dialog box.

Figure 10 illustrates the last page of this view.

Figure 10
Note: The frame descriptions are not present in the actual template. They are shown here for clarity.
The total number of pages generated by this template is dependent on the size of the generated Trend Summary List frame. The size of this frame
is dependent on the number of sample points contained within the associated database. As we adjust the averaging period of the list, the size will
change resulting in pages being added or removed from the report as needed.
Each of these frames is customized by using the associated properties dialog box. The properties dialog box for a frame is displayed by selecting
the frame, then selecting the Properties command from the Frame menu.

Channel List Frame

The Channel List Frame is a child frame attached to the Graph Frame. The Channel List Frame displays a textual summary of the channel records
contained in the database attached to its parent frame. You can customize the list text displayed, using the Channel List Properties dialog box. This
dialog box is displayed by right-clicking on the frame and selecting Properties from the pop-up menu, or by double-clicking on the frame.
Selecting an entry in the Channel List frame causes the trend graph to zoom to the time period of the selected entry. The associated channel trace
will be selected with the Channel Summary and Trend Summary List frames being updated automatically to reflect the new selection.

Channel Summary Frame

The Channel Summary Frame is a child frame conceived from a Trend Graph Frame. The Channel Summary Frame displays a textual summary of
the channel record (trace) selected in its parent frame. You can customize the text displayed, using the Channel Summary Properties dialog box.
The displayed text is obtained from the channel record selected in the parent frame.
The Channel Summary Frame contains static and dynamic text. Static text is displayed as it is typed into the Channel Summary Properties dialog
box. Dynamic text is generated through field substitution. The value obtained from the parent frame of the specified field is substituted for the field
name.
Surrounding the field name with square brackets specifies dynamic text. For example, if the DAR field of the selected exceedence trace is 1.000,
placing the text [DAR] in the Channel Summary Text edit box, will result in 1.000 being displayed in its place on the page.
Dynamic text substitution is useful for templates that create a view when recorded data is attached to it. The field name will reflect the name
contained in the attached database (which may be different from database to database).
