At the end of this lesson students will be enabled to


§ Demonstrate how to use the disc sander
§ Demonstrate how to hand sand
§ Demonstrate how to achieve a high-quality surface finish
Steps to a Surface Finish

§ Pencil Lines and marks are removed


§ Marks and scratches are removed using Sandpaper
§ Sandpaper is used to smooth surfaces
§ When sanding use 180 grit paper and finally 320 grit
§ Sand surfaces with the grain
§ Sand end grain to smooth also
§ Brush off all dust

§ The sander smooths down the surface of wood in preparation of a finish


§ Types of sanders= belt sander, orbital sander
§
§ Smooths flat surfaces quickly
§ Sandpaper can be easily replaced
§ High quality finish can be achieved
§ Care must be taken not to over sand as rounding of edges will be a result

§ Sandpaper is made up of fine abrasive grits bonded to a paper card


§ It can be obtained in sheets, rolls, and belts

§ The aims of sanding is to smooth the surfaces without changing their shape
§ Sand pieces with the sander or by hand sanding with sandpaper wrapped around
a cork block
§ Always sand in the direction of the grain

§ Surfaces are clean, even, and smooth

§ All scratches are removed all end grain is smooth
