Girl: The African animals were amazing, Dad. We had to draw a picture of our favourite ones. I really
wanted to draw the elephants, but they were so far away it was actually quite difficult to see
them. The lions were totally different though. They didn’t move around much, so I had plenty
of time to sit and watch them. Next time, I really want to try drawing the giraffes. They have
such long necks and beautiful eyes.
Dad: I’d love to see your drawing.

Boy: Mm. I’d love to do a tennis player too, but if you’re doing that, I’d rather choose someone who’s
famous for something completely different.
Ruby: Yes, and remember, it’s got to be someone you admire. Maybe a scientist who discovered
something important?
Boy: I saw a TV programme about an architect recently. She sounded incredible. I’ll choose her. I
heard a lot of people are doing famous scientists.
Ruby: That’s true.

8 You will hear two friends talking about their new maths teacher.
Pause
Girl: So what do you think of the new maths teacher? I really like her.
Boy: Yes, me too – although I still don’t enjoy maths very much. Some of it’s so complicated, and
some of the other students are much faster than me.
Girl: But she made it easier to understand, didn’t she? I thought she was very clear.
Boy: That’s true. Didn’t you think she was a bit strict though?
Girl: But only with people who were talking too much – like you and your friends!
Boy: Yes, but we were just having a laugh. You’re right though, we should concentrate harder!

9 You will hear a girl telling a friend about her first skateboarding lesson.
Pause
Boy: How was your first skateboarding lesson?
Girl: Well, I was really nervous at the beginning – just staying on the board was a challenge. I knew
it’d get easier with practice though ... I was a bit embarrassed when everyone was flying past
me really fast and I kept falling off the board! But actually, they were all really friendly, and
luckily the instructor didn’t mind that it took me ages to do anything. But I got better and at the
end of the class I managed to do a jump! I was quite proud!
Boy: So will you have another lesson?
Girl: Definitely!

10 You will hear two friends talking about their geography homework.
Pause
Boy: Have you done your geography homework yet?
Girl: Yes, it looked really hard, but it wasn’t that bad actually. What about you?
Boy: I wanted to do it last night, but I didn’t have the details of the website we need to use. Have you
got them?
Girl: Yes, I wrote them in my notebook. I’ll text them to you later. There’s a lot to read, so you can’t
do it quickly. We don’t have to write as many words as last time.
Boy: Thanks. I’d better make sure I start this evening – it needs to be finished by the end of the week.

13 You will hear two friends talking about their volleyball team.
Pause
Girl: Are you looking forward to the next volleyball match?
Boy: Of course. It’ll be a close game, though. I’m not sure we’ll beat them.
Girl: We’ve played lots of games recently and we’re all pretty tired, but I still think we’ll play well
enough to have a chance. I guess there’s always more you can do to get ready.
Boy: Half our team weren’t even at the last training session.
Girl: They were ill. It’d help if we had a few extra members available.

You will hear a teacher telling a group of students about a school cookery competition.
Man: Morning, everyone. I wanted to talk to you today about the annual school cookery
competition. It’s taking place next month, so you’ve got plenty of time to think about what to
make. This year, we’re asking competitors to create two different dishes. These will be a main
course, like last year, but also a snack instead of a dessert.
As many ingredients as possible should come from the local area, and all the dishes must be
healthy. We’re going to hold the competition on the last day of term. All the equipment that the
competitors will need will be set up in the canteen. The school hall is having a new floor fitted
that week, so we won’t be able to use it for the competition, even though it’s probably more
suitable. People can come and watch for as long as they want.
Choosing a winner is always difficult! George Cadwell, a restaurant chef from the town, was
hoping to come and judge the competition for us, but he’s away that day, so a local farmer has
kindly agreed to do this instead. Her name’s Hannah Wilkinson.
Since the competition started four years ago, each year’s winner has received some recipe
books, all signed by the authors, as a prize. This time, however, the winner gets a set of
saucepans. They’re worth well over a hundred pounds.
To enter the competition, send an email to Mrs Coulson. You can email her using her school
email address: [email protected]. I’ll spell that for you, it’s C-O-U-L-S-O-N.
If you’re planning to enter, then you need to get your application in as soon as possible. It’s the
twenty-ninth of March today, and you have just one week until the fifth of April to apply. The
competition itself is on the tenth of May.

Keri: Our job was to record things in notebooks about the behaviour of wild parrots. We had to
watch them and describe what we saw in detail. It’s actually pretty hard to put in words how a
parrot’s behaving! My parents often couldn’t see them because parrots hide so well among the
trees, but my eyes were better. The birds are active early in the morning, so we had to be up
then too, which didn’t bother me at all.
