This is the Cambridge English: Preliminary for Schools Listening Test.
There are four parts to the test. You will hear each part twice.
We will now stop for a moment.
Please ask any questions now, because you must not speak during the test.
Now look at the instructions for Part One.

1 What did the girl enjoy doing at the party?

Boy: Did you go to Anna’s party at the weekend?
Girl: Yes. It was great, actually. Loads of people were dancing.
Boy: Including you?
Girl: Of course. I was hoping to have a long chat with Anna because I haven’t had the chance to talk
to her for ages, but the music was so good I didn’t want to stop.
Boy: Was the food good?

2 What did the girl leave at the cinema?

Boy: How was the film, Jenny? You said you’d text me about it!
Jenny: Sorry – my phone’s broken. I dropped it on the pavement just before I went into the cinema. I
was so annoyed!
Boy: Oh no!
Jenny: Yeah. I usually keep it in the pocket of my jacket, but I decided not to wear it to the cinema. It
was a bad day because my scarf fell under the seat there too – I didn’t notice until I got home.
Anyway, at least the film was good. You’d like it.
Boy: Really?

3 What time did the football match start?

Boy: Hi Paula. How was the football match you went to see?
Paula: Good thanks, although my dad thought we’d be late – we didn’t leave till two thirty! But we
arrived at the stadium in plenty of time for it to start at 3 o’clock. But then dad couldn’t find
anywhere to park!
Boy: Did you miss the start?
Paula: The teams had problems getting to the stadium, so luckily it was delayed till half past three. It
was a good match, and our team won.
Boy: Brilliant!

4 What does the boy decide to give his teacher?

Mum: It’s the last day of term tomorrow, Charlie.
Charlie: Yes, I want to give my teacher something. I was thinking about some chocolates. I know she
likes them, so that’s a possibility. I also wondered about making her a card, but I’m not very
good at drawing. So then I thought flowers would be nice. But they aren’t very original.
Mum: Well, instead of the card, why not pick her some flowers from our garden? That’ll be different –
much nicer than chocolates from a shop, or a card.
Charlie: Good idea. Thanks Mum!

5 What animals did the girl draw at the zoo?

Girl: The African animals were amazing, Dad. We had to draw a picture of our favourite ones. I really
wanted to draw the elephants, but they were so far away it was actually quite difficult to see
them. The lions were totally different though. They didn’t move around much, so I had plenty
of time to sit and watch them. Next time, I really want to try drawing the giraffes. They have
such long necks and beautiful eyes.
Dad: I’d love to see your drawing.

6 Who will the boy give a class presentation about?

Boy: Mm. I’d love to do a tennis player too, but if you’re doing that, I’d rather choose someone who’s
famous for something completely different.
Ruby: Yes, and remember, it’s got to be someone you admire. Maybe a scientist who discovered
something important?
Boy: I saw a TV programme about an architect recently. She sounded incredible. I’ll choose her. I
heard a lot of people are doing famous scientists.
Ruby: That’s true.

7 What type of holiday would the boy like to have?

Mum: I’ve been thinking about our next holiday.
Boy: Really, Mum? Somewhere by the sea – sunbathing and all that?
Mum: Maybe, although lying in the sun isn’t my favourite thing to do.
Boy: Nor mine. A city then? I didn’t like sightseeing when I was younger, but I’ve changed.
Mum: I don’t know if your sister’s old enough for that. I was thinking of a week in the countryside. We
can go walking, have picnics …
Boy: That sounds a bit dull to me, Mum, but I guess you have to think of the whole family.

8 You will hear two friends talking about their new maths teacher.
Pause
Girl: So what do you think of the new maths teacher? I really like her.
Boy: Yes, me too – although I still don’t enjoy maths very much. Some of it’s so complicated, and
some of the other students are much faster than me.
Girl: But she made it easier to understand, didn’t she? I thought she was very clear.
Boy: That’s true. Didn’t you think she was a bit strict though?
Girl: But only with people who were talking too much – like you and your friends!
Boy: Yes, but we were just having a laugh. You’re right though, we should concentrate harder!

9 You will hear a girl telling a friend about her first skateboarding lesson.
Pause
Boy: How was your first skateboarding lesson?
Girl: Well, I was really nervous at the beginning – just staying on the board was a challenge. I knew
it’d get easier with practice though ... I was a bit embarrassed when everyone was flying past
me really fast and I kept falling off the board! But actually, they were all really friendly, and
luckily the instructor didn’t mind that it took me ages to do anything. But I got better and at the
end of the class I managed to do a jump! I was quite proud!
Boy: So will you have another lesson?
Girl: Definitely!

10 You will hear two friends talking about their geography homework.
Pause
Boy: Have you done your geography homework yet?
Girl: Yes, it looked really hard, but it wasn’t that bad actually. What about you?
Boy: I wanted to do it last night, but I didn’t have the details of the website we need to use. Have you
got them?
Girl: Yes, I wrote them in my notebook. I’ll text them to you later. There’s a lot to read, so you can’t
do it quickly. We don’t have to write as many words as last time.

11 You will hear two friends talking about a film.

Pause
Girl: Have you been to see the new comedy film, ‘House of Clowns’, yet?
Boy: Yes, last weekend. What about you?

Boy: I guess some bits were quite funny.

Girl: I think I was expecting more because it had some famous people in it.
Boy: I know what you mean. Actually, I took more notice of the soundtrack. I thought the songs were
really well-chosen for all the different scenes.

12 You will hear two students talking about a class presentation.

Pause
Boy:
It’s my turn to give a presentation in our next science class. What did you think of the one in
yesterday’s class?
Girl: It was OK I suppose, but not one of the better presentations I’ve seen so far. I really wanted
more information – it was on a subject I enjoy learning about. He’d studied it, but he needed a
few more examples to explain what he meant. The talk was about the right length, but that’s
mainly because he just seemed to repeat the same thing.
Boy: I know. Well, I’d better make sure I don’t make the same mistake!

Boy: Of course. It’ll be a close game, though. I’m not sure we’ll beat them.
Girl: We’ve played lots of games recently and we’re all pretty tired, but I still think we’ll play well
enough to have a chance. I guess there’s always more you can do to get ready.
Boy: Half our team weren’t even at the last training session.
Girl: They were ill. It’d help if we had a few extra members available.

You will hear a teacher telling a group of students about a school cookery competition.
Man: Morning, everyone. I wanted to talk to you today about the annual school cookery
competition. It’s taking place next month, so you’ve got plenty of time to think about what to
make. This year, we’re asking competitors to create two different dishes. These will be a main
course, like last year, but also a snack instead of a dessert.

As many ingredients as possible should come from the local area, and all the dishes must be
healthy. We’re going to hold the competition on the last day of term. All the equipment that the
competitors will need will be set up in the canteen. The school hall is having a new floor fitted
that week, so we won’t be able to use it for the competition, even though it’s probably more
suitable. People can come and watch for as long as they want.

Choosing a winner is always difficult! George Cadwell, a restaurant chef from the town, was
hoping to come and judge the competition for us, but he’s away that day, so a local farmer has
kindly agreed to do this instead. Her name’s Hannah Wilkinson.

Since the competition started four years ago, each year’s winner has received some recipe
books, all signed by the authors, as a prize. This time, however, the winner gets a set of
saucepans. They’re worth well over a hundred pounds.

To enter the competition, send an email to Mrs Coulson. You can email her using her school
email address: [email protected]. I’ll spell that for you, it’s C-O-U-L-S-O-N.

If you’re planning to enter, then you need to get your application in as soon as possible. It’s the
twenty-ninth of March today, and you have just one week until the fifth of April to apply. The
competition itself is on the tenth of May.

You will hear an interview with a girl called Keri Andrews, who worked as a volunteer on a
research project in a rainforest.
Man: Keri, this summer you worked as a volunteer on a research project in a rainforest. Why did you
decide to take part?

Man: Wow. How did you feel before you went?

Keri: I didn’t know what to expect, so I wasn’t sure if I’d enjoy it or not. I wasn’t too worried about
what we’d have to do, because I knew we’d receive lots of training. I’d never done anything like
this before, though, so I was really keen to get started.

Keri: Our job was to record things in notebooks about the behaviour of wild parrots. We had to
watch them and describe what we saw in detail. It’s actually pretty hard to put in words how a
parrot’s behaving! My parents often couldn’t see them because parrots hide so well among the
trees, but my eyes were better. The birds are active early in the morning, so we had to be up
then too, which didn’t bother me at all.

Man: What did you eat while you were there?

Man: Thanks, Keri.
