The Respiratory System Consists of Air Passages

The respiratory system consists of the air passages including the nostrils, nasal cavity, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, bronchioles and alveoli. It also includes the lungs, pulmonary vessels and breathing muscles like the diaphragm. The system provides for the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide between the atmosphere and body cells during respiration. It also filters, warms and humidifies air, helps maintain homeostasis, and is responsible for speech and smell.

The respiratory system consists of air passages, These include nostril, nasal cavity, pharynx, larynx

trachea, bronchi, bronchiole, alveoli. The next are pulmonary vessels, the lungs, and breathing muscles,
namely diaphragm. The system provides the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide between the
atmosphere and the body cells during respiration. In addition to air distribution and gas exchange, the
respiratory system filters, warms, and humidifies the inspired air. It helps the body maintain homeostasis.
respiratory system organs are responsible for speech and the sense of smell.
The respiratory tract consists of the upper respiratory tract and the lower respiratory tract. The
upper respiratory tract includes the nose and nasal cavities, pharynx and larynx.
The nose is made up of bone and cartilage. The mucous membrane lines the nasal cavity where
the air we breathe in is warmed, filtered, and humidified. The mucus traps particles and pathogens.
The pharynx (the throat) is the passage that receives air from the nasal cavity. Its obstruction may
prevent air from getting to the lungs. The pharynx opens into the larynx and is divided into the
nasopharynx, the oropharynx, and the laryngopharynx.
The larynx is the air passage between the pharynx and the trachea. It consists of the sub larynx,
larynx, and supra larynx. It plays an important role in human speech. The sound production includes the
vocal cords.
The lower respiratory tract is composed of the trachea, bronchi, bronchial tree, and lungs.
The trachea is the main airway into the lungs. It splits into the right and left bronchi. Goblet cells
produce mucus that traps airborne particles and microorganisms
The primary bronchi branch into smaller passageways until they terminate in tiny air sacs called
alveoli. The smallest branch of the tracheobronchial tree is the bronchioles and terminal bronchioles
The lungs are pyramid-shaped, paired organs that are soft and spongy. The right lung has a
greater volume than the left lung and it is shorter and wider. The right lung consists of three lobes: the
superior, middle and inferior lobes. The left lung is composed of two lobes: the superior and inferior
lobes.
The base of the lung is found near the diaphragm (the midriff) that is the maindome-shaped
muscle of respiration.
