Civil Engineering Department CE475: Construction Methods Third 2023 Classwork 1

This document contains instructions for a classwork assignment on construction methods. Students are asked to: [1] Draw balance lines on a mass diagram showing haul distances for dozers, scrapers, and trucks; [2] Calculate haul quantities for scrapers and trucks; [3] Find the average haul distance of dozers and scrapers between stations 0-8; and [4] Calculate the average haul grade for scrapers between stations 0-8, given an elevation change of 30 meters. The mass diagram shows cut and fill volumes at each station along a stretch of road.

Civil Engineering Department CE475: Construction methods

Third 2023
Classwork 1
Instructor Dr. Ahmed Taha
The figure below shows the mass diagram for a stretch of road. Assuming the economical haul distance for dozers ,
scrapers, and trucks are 200m, 600m, and 1600m, respectively.

a) Draw the balance lines for dozers, scrapers , and trucks.

b) What are the total haul quantities in BCM for : Scrapers and Trucks?
c) Calculate the average haul distance of dozers and scrapers working within stations 0 – 8.
d) The scrapers between stations 0 - 8 experience an elevation change of 30 meters. Calculate the average haul grade
for these scrapers.
