Simon climbs the mountain and discovers that the "beast" is just a dead parachutist. On his way down to tell the others, the boys at Jack's feast mistake Simon for the beast and savagely beat him to death in their frenzied dancing. Simon was trying to deliver the truth to the group, like a religious figure, but was killed like Jesus Christ. The body of the real dead parachutist is then blown toward the screaming boys by the wind.
