3-Fracture Pressure Calculation3

This document contains information and questions about calculating fracture gradients for oil well drilling. It provides depth and pressure data for 9 wells and asks to calculate fracture gradients using 3 different methods. It also provides leakoff test data and asks to determine the fracture gradient from that. Further questions involve calculating fracture gradients for different mud weights and depths using provided charts.

1- Determine fracture gradients for the following conditions. Use the

methods of (1) Hubbert and Willis, (2) Mathews and Kelly, and (3)
Eaton. Assume ‘’Louisiana’’ conditions for the Mathews and Kelly
calculations.

13000 13.1

9000 9.6

6500 9.0

8000 10.2

11000 15.1

17000 18.0

4500 9.9

10500 Normal

15000 15.6

2- Prepare a graph of fracture gradient vs depth for the methods used in
problem 4.1. Assume normal formation pressures.

3- Calculate the fracture gradient for the following set of deepwater

conditions. Use the approach described in example 4.2.
Freeboard = 50 ft
Water depth = 1700 ft
Casing depth below seafloor = 6000 ft

4- Use the following leakoff data to determine the following fracture

gradient. Casing is set at 12000 ft and the mud weight is 13.9 lb/gal.
