Learning Activity Sheet

The document provides examples of math word problems involving addition and subtraction without regrouping, such as calculating the total number of soap bars or amount of change due. It also gives multi-step word problems testing multiplication and division skills, like calculating total earnings over 2 years or the cost of purchasing 16 computer tables at $2671 each. The purpose is to help students practice solving one-step math word problems involving various basic operations.

Addition or Subtraction Without Regrouping

Have you tried selling anything like fish or vegetables before? What do

you say when your customer asks you how much his/her bill is? How about when
you are the one who is buying? Do you ask how much your bill is and pay right
away? or do you compute first for the cost of the items you bought before paying for
them?

Do you take a jeep or a tricycle to get to work or to the market? When

you

pay the driver a 20-peso bill, can you easily compute how much change you should
get? After spending some of your 500-peso budgets, how will you know how much
is left without counting your money?

What Are Addition and Subtraction?

The addition is used to figure out the total of two or more numbers.

Subtraction is used to find the difference between two numbers.

Addition and subtraction are useful for many activities of everyday life,
like

setting the table, making changes at the supermarket, and playing some games.
Addition and subtraction prepare children for learning about other math topics,
including multiplication and division, in school.
Activity 1: Try This!

A. There are three brands of laundry soap in Marie’s sari-sari store. There are

131 bars of Bubbles, 514 bars of Color, and 123 bars of Silky. Sonia wanted to know
how many bars of soap there are in all.

Sonia aligned the addends first. Then, she added the digits that belong to the
same place.

B. Danny bought a pair of slippers which costs P45. How much change should

he get if he gave the seller a 100-peso bill?

100

Activity 2: Problem-Solving:

A. Jenny sells boiled eggs at the bus station. She boiled 24 eggs which came
from

the native chickens in her backyard and 72 more eggs which she bought from the
sari-sari store. How many eggs did Jenny boil in all?

B. Linda bought a sandwich and buko juice for snacks. The sandwich costs P18

while the buko juice costs P7. How much did she spend in all?
C. Marissa brought 88 mangoes to the market to sell. When she returned home,

she counted all the mangoes that were left. There were 12 mangoes left. How many
mangoes were sold?

D. The distance from Ben’s house to the capital town of their province is 62

kilometers. The distance from their house to the gasoline station is 14 kilometers.
How far away are the gasoline station and the capital town from each other?

Learning Competency: Multiplies and divides a 3 to 5- digit whole number by 2 to
3-digit number

Multiplies and Divides 3 to 5 Digit Whole Numbers by 2 to 3 Digit Numbers
How do you compute the total price of 315 pencils if a pencil costs P11?
How much would a committee spend for the dinner of 123 delegates if dinner for
one-person costs P65? How would you know how much a pack of noodles is if a
box of noodles containing 64 packs costs P384? These practical problems require
you to perform multiplication and division to come up with a solution.
People simply cannot do without multiplication. You use it to determine
the total cost when you buy large quantities of a single item (for example, buying
210 pieces of notebooks with a unit price of P20). It may also be used to compute
for monthly expenses given a fixed amount spent in a day (such as in finding the
amount spent in a month for the daily allowance of a son/ daughter who goes to
school every day).
Activity: Let’s Try This!

Mr. Bautista earns P7250 in a month. How much will he earn in 2 years? Do
you know how many months there are in a year? If you answered 12 months, you’re
right. How many months are there in 2 years? Did you say 24 months? If you did,
you’re correct. To find the answer to the problem, multiply Mr. Bautista’s monthly
income (P7250) by the number of months he will work (24). Shown on the next page
are the steps in to multiply 7250 by 24.

A. Divide 304804 by 842
Answer:

Activity: You Can Do This!

A. Solve for the product.

1. 8263 × 97 2. 67048 × 846

B. Solve for the quotient.

1. 8234 ÷ 46 2. 37083 ÷ 723

C. Divide 2560 by 78 and check your answer.

D. A new office needs 16 computer tables. If a computer table costs P2671,
how much is needed to purchase 16 computer tables?
