Lab 04 - Voltage and Current Division Rules
Lab 04 - Voltage and Current Division Rules
Name
Reg. No
Marks / Grade
EXPERIMENT NO. 4
Equipment:
DMM, Resistors, Breadboard, Connecting wires, DC supply
The Voltage Divider Rule (VDR) shows how the voltage distributes among different resistors
in a series circuit. Similarly, the Current Divider Rule (CDR) shows how current distributes in
a parallel circuit.

Figure. 4.1
1. From previous lab, we know that same amount of current flows in a series circuit but
total voltage is divided across resistors.
2. Calculate the voltage across each resistor using VDR formula.
3. Measure the voltage across each resistor though DMM.
4. Do these vales match? Comment on results.
5. Also check that sum of voltages is equal to source voltage.

2. From previous lab, we know that voltage remains same across components in parallel
circuit while total current is divided.
3. Calculate the current though each resistor using CDR formula.
4. Measure the current though each resistor though DMM.

6. Also check that sum of currents is equal to total current.

Procedure:
6. First perform all the calculations for the circuit shown in fig. 4.3 to find the voltage
across and current through each element by using the concepts of voltage and
current divider rules.
7. Connect the circuit on the bread board according to circuit diagram.
8. Measure the voltage across each resistance.
9. Measure the current flowing through each resistance and write these values in the
corresponding empty space in the table.
10. Compare both values and conclude your observations at the end of manual.
Safety Precautions
✓ Check your circuit thoroughly before turning on the power.
✓ When measuring voltage or current, make sure the DMM is correctly set
for what you need to measure.
✓ Do not connect your hands directly to the ends of resistors so that your
resistance should not come parallel to resistance.
