CARBOXYLIC ACIDS Lab Guide 1

This document describes procedures to test the properties of carboxylic acids. Samples of acetic acid, oleic acid, and benzoic acid were tested for solubility in water. Acetic acid was found to be soluble in water, forming a clear solution. Cooking oil and butter were also tested to form fatty acids. When heated with hydrochloric acid, the cooking oil took on a slightly yellow color and vinegar odor. Additional tests reacted the samples with sodium bicarbonate and potassium permanganate to observe changes in appearance, color, and odor. The results helped identify characteristics of the carboxylic acid samples.

CARBOXYLIC ACIDS

MATERIALS: SAMPLES: CHEMICALS/ REAGENTS:

• Test tube holder • Acetic acid • Distilled water

• Test tube rack • Oleic acid • 3M HCl
• Test tubes • Benzoic Acid • NA2CO3
• Evaporating dish • diluted H2SO4
• Water bath • 0.1% KMnO4
• Hot plate • Ethanol
• Ferric chloride
• butter
• cooking oil

PROCEDURES:

A. TEST FOR SOLUBILITY

1. Label three test tubes as TEST TUBE#1 (Acetic acid), TEST TUBE#2 (Oleic acid) and TEST TUBE#3
(Benzoic acid) and then add 5 gtts of distilled water
 Shake to mix.
 Observe the solubility in water
 Write your observation

TABLE OF RESULTS:

SAMPLE OBSERVATIONS
Acetic Acid - Acetic acid mixed with water, meaning it is
soluble in water. The cloudy appearance
became a clear solution.
Oleic Acid
Benzoic acid

FATTY ACID FORMATION

1.In TEST TUBE #1, add 5mL of cooking oil and in TEST TUBE #2, add 5 mL of butter.
 Place in water bath for 5 minutes
 Pour the contents into an evaporating dish
 Add 5 gtts of 3M HCl
 Note the appearance, color and odor
TABLE OF RESULTS:

SAMPLE OBSERVATIONS
Acetic Acid Appearance – the mixture appeared as a layered
solution because the acetic acid and cooking oil did
not mix.
Color – the color of the oil became slightly yellow,
and the acetic acid remain whitish
Odor – vinegar-like smell
Oleic Acid
Benzoic acid

B. REACTION WITH SODIUM BICARBONATE

1. In TEST TUBE #1-3, add 5 gtts of and in TEST TUBE #2, add 5 mL of butter.
 Place in water bath for 5 minutes
 Pour the contents into an evaporating dish
 Add 5 gtts of 3M HCl
 Note the appearance, color and odor

TABLE OF RESULTS:

SAMPLE OBSERVATIONS
Acetic Acid Appearance – clear liquid solution
Color- still unchanged (clear)
Odor – vinegar-like smell
Oleic Acid
Benzoic acid

C. TEST FOR REDUCING PROPERTY

1. In TEST TUBE #1, add 5mL of cooking oil and in TEST TUBE #2, add 5 mL of butter.
 Place in water bath for 5 minutes
 Pour the contents into an evaporating dish
 Add 5 gtts of 3M HCl
 Note the appearance, color and odor
TABLE OF RESULTS:

SAMPLE OBSERVATIONS
Acetic Acid Appearance – clear liquid solution
Color- yellow
Odor – vinegar-like smell
Oleic Acid
Benzoic acid
