CIVE 207 Solid Mechanics, W2024: ASSIGNMENT #2 SOLUTION

Problem 1: (2 points)
A square column is made of 20 mm thick plates welded together to form a box section and then filled
with plain concrete as shown in Figure P1. The outside dimensions of the column are 300 mm x 300 mm.
The steel casing has a modulus of elasticity of 205 GPa, and the plain concrete core has a modulus of
elasticity of 20 GPa. Determine the maximum permissible load P on the column if the allowable stresses
in the steel and concrete are 60 MPa and 6.0 MPa, respectively. Report the average normal stresses and
strains in the concrete core and the steel casing when the maximum load is applied.

Problem 2: (2 points)
The structure shown in Figure P2 consists of a rigid beam (not deformable) hinged at A and supported by
a steel (E = 200 GPa) cable at B and a concrete (E = 20 GPa) support at C. The cross-sectional area of the
cable is 70 mm2 and that of the concrete support is 5000 mm2. A load of 100 kN is applied at the free end
of the beam. Determine the average normal stresses induced in the steel cable and the concrete support.

Problem 3: (1 point)
A horizontal rigid plate is supported by three steel posts each having 250 mm x 250 mm square cross-
section and length L = 2 m as shown in Figure P3. Before the load P is applied, the middle post is shorter
than the outer ones by an amount d = 0.5 mm. Determine the maximum permissible load P if the
allowable stress in steel in compression is 60 MPa. Take E = 200 GPa.

Problem 4: (1 point)
The angle of twist of a 2.5-m long solid round transmission shaft must not exceed 2º when a twisting
moment of 10 kN-m is applied to the shaft. Determine the required diameter of the shaft if the shaft is
made of steel with an allowable shear stress of 90 MPa and a modulus of rigidity of 79 GPa.

Problem 5: (2 points)
For the stepped shaft shown below (Figure P5), determine the angle of twist of end D with respect to end
A. Sketch the twisting moment diagram and the angle of twist diagram of the shaft (with all appropriate
numerical values). Let G = 79 GPa.

Problem 6: (2 point)
The solid circular shaft shown in Figure P6 tapers from a diameter of 2rA to 2rB. Determine the formula to
calculate the angle of twist at the free end B relative to the fixed end A. Let the shear modulus be G.
