HCI Objective QuestionBank Mid1

The document discusses key concepts in human-computer interaction including definitions of HCI, user interfaces, input and output. It explains that HCI focuses on designing, evaluating and implementing interactive computing systems with the goal of improving interactions between users and computers. The user interface consists of input, through which users communicate needs to the computer, and output, how the computer conveys results to the user. The document also provides an overview of the history of user interfaces from early text-based terminals to modern graphical user interfaces using pointing devices.

UNIT-I

1. Human Computer Interaction (HCI), alternatively Man Machine Interaction (MMI)

or Computer– Human Interaction (CHI) is the study of interaction between people
(users) and computers.
2. Human Computer Interaction is a discipline concerned with the design, evaluation
and implementation of interactive computing systems.
3. The user interface is the part of a computer and its software that people can see, hear,
touch, talk to, or otherwise understand or direct.
4. The user interface has essentially two components: input and output.
5. User Interface Design is a subset of field of study called Human Computer
Interaction
6. Input is how a person communicates his / her needs to the computer
7. Output is how the computer conveys the results of its computations and requirements
to the user
8. A basic goal of HCI is – to improve the interactions between users and computers
9. Expand the following terms:
a. ARPANET
b. HTTP
c. WIMP
d. WYSIWYG
e. ISO
f. ANSI
10. In 1970s, IBM introduced 3270 cathode ray tube text-based terminal.
11. Most early screens were monochromatic, typically presenting green text on black
backgrounds.
12. In a graphical interface the primary interaction mechanism is a pointing device of
some kind.
13. Older text-based screen possessed a one dimensional
14. Graphic screens assumed a three-dimensional look.
15. Text could be replaced by graphical images called icons.
16. A System should look, act and operate the same throughout the Design Process:
Consistency.

UNIT-II

1. Eyes and mind see objects as belonging together if they are near each other in space
called Proximity
2. Eyes and mind see objects as belonging together if they share common visual
properties such as color, size, shape, brightness or orientation called Similarity
3. Other name of Short-term is Working memory
4. Information stored within the short-term memory last from 10 to 30 seconds
5. Important Stimuli are called Signals; Those that are not important or unwanted are
called Noise
6. Sensory storage is the buffer where the automatic processing of information
collected from our senses takes place
7. The capacity of the eye to resolve details is called Visual Acuity
8. Foveal vision is used to focus directly on something; Peripheral vision senses
anything in the area surroundings location
9. The capacity of lowest level of information processing is unlimited or unknown
10. The capacity of highest level of information processing is limited
11. A Technique that has dramatically increased reading speeds is called Rapid Serial
Visual Presentation (RSVP).
12. A metaphor is a concept where one’s body of knowledge about one thing is used to
understand something else.

UNIT-III
1. Sequence of use groupings involves arranging information items in the order in
which they are commonly received or transmitted.
2. In Function or Category, information items are grouped according to the purpose or
by some common parameter.
3. Importance grouping is based on the information’s importance to the user’s
task/need.
