6.9 VNX Block Hardware Description: VNX5200 / VNX5400 / VNX5600 / VNX5800 / VNX7600
The following sections describe the components included and available with the VNX Block product hardware
configuration of the VNX5200 / VNX5400 / VNX5600 / VNX5800 / VNX7600 models. VNX models in this product
hardware configuration are suitable for SAN-attached storage requirements.
VNX DPE (Disk and Processor Enclosure): The DPE for the VNX5200 / VNX5400 / VNX5600 / VNX5800 /
VNX7600 models contains the following:
2.5-inch Disk Array Enclosure (DAE)
Two Storage Processors (SP)
Up to five I/O modules per SP
Redundant power supplies
Battery Backup Unit (BBU)
Fans
Base modules with SAS ports integrated
Also available: Front-end Fibre Channel, iSCSI or FCoE ports, management ports, and up to 25 slots for
SAS disk drives.
Vault Drives: The first four drives of the first DAE are designated as Vault Drives.
SAN Connection Protocols: Protocols supported are Fibre Channel, iSCSI, and Fibre Channel over Ethernet
(FCoE). The DPE is 3U tall, where 1U equals 1.75 inches (4.45 cm).
VNX5200/VNX5400 limitation: The I/O module slot 0 is not useable in the VNX5200 and VNX5400
models due to I/O slot limitations
In the US, Canada and all countries that would use the C13-PWR-12 power cord (C13 plug into the DPE power
supply and a NEMA 5-15P plug into the power source).
Customers can purchase autotransformers to increase the available 110V power to the 220V required for the DPE.
The following unit has been validated in the EMC lab and is recommended to customers for purchase.
Hammond Autotransformer:

Battery on Board replaces SPS (Standby Power Supply): The Battery on Board is a newly introduced component
for the VNX5200, VNX5400, VNX5600, VNX5800 and VNX7600 models, replacing the SPS. Battery on Board is a
Lithium Ion (Li-Ion) battery-based uninterruptible power supply used instead of an SPS to provide AC loss protection
for write cache. If power to the DPE is lost, the Battery on Board will power the DPE long enough to write all data in
cache to disk.
Li-Ion batteries require special handling and shipping. Li-Ion batteries are lighter and longer lasting than
lead acid batteries.
Battery on Board is also referred to as Battery Backup Unit. Battery on Bus is also used to refer to the same
component.
VNX Block DAE (Disk Array Enclosure): There are three DAE versions available for the VNX5200 / VNX5400 /
VNX5600 / VNX5800 / VNX7600 models:
DAE-15: The DAE-15 is 3U tall and contains up to 15 3.5-inch SAS/Flash disk drives.
DAE-25: The DAE-25 is 2U tall and contains up to 25 2.5-inch SAS/Flash disk drives.
DAE-60: The DAE-60 (Voyager) is 4U tall and contains up to 60 3.5-inch SAS/Flash disk drives.
The 60-drive 4U DAE is a top-loading DAE and requires a high density EMC rack.
For VNX-F7000 only on Clearwater River: DAE-120: The DAE-120 (Viking) is 3U tall and contains up
to 120 2.5-inch SAS/Flash disk drives. The 120-drive 3U DAE is a top-loading DAE and requires a high
density EMC rack. Voltage required is 200-240VAC. DAE-120 will be supported on other VNX2 platforms
in the Salmon River release of VNX2 OE.
DAE-120: With the Salmon River release, DAE-120 (Viking) is supported on
VNX5400/5600/5800/7600/8000 systems.
VNX5200 systems do not support DAE-120. The DAE-120 and its drives are customer installable in certain
use cases and requires Professional Services (PS) and RPQ in other circumstances.
The Viking (and Voyager) DAE is customer installable if purchased with the EMC Dense Rack. The VNX
would be factory racked and would not require the customer to rack any hardware. EMC allows, by RPQ
only, customers to use non-EMC dense racks. Part of the RPQ approval would require PS to do the hardware
racking. The VNX is still considered customer installable, just not customer rack-able due to the weight of
the dense DAEs and OSHA requirements.
For upgrades, when a dense DAE (Voyager or Viking) is ordered PS Service PS-BAS-UPDAEB is added
along with the adder PS-BAS-UPDAE if necessary to accommodate the racking of all dense DAE upgrades.
These upgrades require the use of a lift kit and sometime a lift kit extender and is used to move the Voyager
or Viking from a pallet into a rack, regardless of height. Customers do not have access to the lift kit.
The procedure for ordering these kits from logistics is found in VNX SolVe. Lift kits are assembled on-site
and unassembled, repacked and returned to logistics when finished. If the DAEs are going to be located in
an EMC rack above 31U then the EMC Service ladder is required. If the DAEs are going into a customer-
provided rack and >31U high, the customer is responsible for providing an OSHA-approved (or country
equivalent) service ladder.
If just drives are ordered to go into an existing dense DAE and the DAE is racked over 31U in the rack the
EMC ladder is required. Customers are not allowed to use the ladder, the ladder is "owned" by EMC, but
customers are responsible for storing it onsite and making it available for EMC when drives need to be
replaced or upgrades are added.
Customers with any Voyager or Viking over 31U requires a Premium contract. Thus, *all* drives are FRUs
once a Voyager or Viking is >31U high, not just the drives above 31U. If the Voyager or Viking are <31U
high the customer can buy Enhanced and all drives are CRUs.
The following are DAE-25 drives that have been qualified with Viking DAE-120 for the Salmon River
release. See the CRU/FRU Disk in 120-Drive DAE section below for drive part numbers.
o 2.5-inch 800G SSD – MLC (Hitachi Sunset Cove)
o 2.5-inch 100/200/400GB SSD-MLC (Samsung RDX)
o 2.5-inch 1.2TB 10K SAS (Hitachi Cobra-E Plus)
o 2.5-inch 100/200GB SSD-SLC (Samsung RDX)
o 2.5-inch 15K 300GB SAS (Seagate YellowJacket)
VNX5200/VNX5400 limitation: Only DAE-15 and DAE-25 are available on the VNX5200 and VNX5400 models.
DAE-60 is not supported on these two models.
VNX Block Storage Processor interface: The interface to the VNX Storage Processors for these VNX models is
Serial Attached SCSI (SAS).
VNX Disk Drives: All disk drives ship in either a 2.5-inch or a 3.5-inch carrier to accommodate the DPE or DAE in
which it will be installed. All drives have a SAS interface to the DAE.
VNX Block Software: All VNX DPE and DAE arrays run the same OE for Block software. All are managed by the
same Unisphere 1.3 management software. All are installed with tools delivered within the VNX Installation Toolbox.
6.10 VNX File Hardware Description: VNX5200, VNX5400, VNX5600, VNX5800 and VNX7600
The following sections describe the components included and available with the VNX File product hardware
configuration of the VNX5200 / VNX5400 / VNX5600 / VNX5800 / VNX7600 models. These models provide NAS
services by the addition of VNX OE for File software, Data Movers and Control Stations to the components of the
VNX Block hardware configuration described in the preceding section.
DME (Data Mover Enclosure): The VNX5200, VNX5400, VNX5600, VNX5800 and VNX7600 models re-use the
older generation VNX DME. Each VNX may be purchased with either one or more Data Movers. Each DME
contains one or two Data Movers, redundant power supplies and fans, management modules, and UltraFlex I/O
modules. The DME is 2U tall.
VNX File Data Movers: Data Movers provide NAS services to enable file system access to VNX storage.
The supported file system protocols include NFS (v2, v3, v4 and v4.1 with pNFS), CIFS (SMB 1, SMB 2 and
SMB3), and FTP (including SFTP and FTPs). The VNX5200, VNX5400 and VNX5600 may be purchased with
either one or two Data Movers. The VNX5800 may be purchased with one, two, or three Data Movers.

The Thompson River, SP3 release increases the Data Mover quantity on VNX5200, VNX5400, VNX5600,
VNX5800 and VNX7600. VNX5200 systems can now support up to three DMs, VNX5400 and VNX5600 systems
support up to four DMs, VNX5800 systems support up to six DMs, and VNX7600 systems support up to eight DMs.
The new limits on data mover quantities are supported for both new SP3 shipments and for existing
installations that want to add data movers up to the new limits along with an upgrade to SP3 or later
The VNX5200 support DM field upgrades from 1 to 2, 1 to 3, and 2 to 3.
The VNX5400 support DM field upgrades from 1 to 2, 1 to 3, 1 to 4, 2 to 3, 2 to 4, and 3 to 4.

VNX File Control Station (CS): The VNX File Control Station (CS) in the VNX5200, VNX5400, VNX5600,
VNX5800 and VNX7600 models uses Quad core 3.1GHz Xeon with 8GB memory (only uses 4GB). This CS
leverages 32-bit RHEL5 kernel (2.6.18-308.1.1) with security patches applied. Each VNX5400, VNX5600,
VNX5800 and VNX7600 can be configured with either one or two Control Stations. The Control Station is 1U tall.
VNX File Software: The VNX5200, VNX5400, VNX5600, VNX5800 and VNX7600 models use the same VNX
OE for File software. All are managed by the same Unisphere 1.3 management software. All are installed with tools
delivered within the VNX Installation Toolbox.
VNX Block Software: DPE and SPE arrays run the same VNX OE for Block software. They are managed by the
same Unisphere v1.3 management software and are installed with tools delivered within VNX Installation Toolbox.
6.13 VNX Unified Hardware Description: VNX5200, VNX5400, VNX5600, VNX5800, VNX7600 and VNX8000
The VNX5200, VNX5400, VNX5600, VNX5800, VNX7600 and VNX8000 are all available as “Unified” products.
This means they allow the storage array to be shared between the Data Movers and third party hosts. There are no
hardware differences between the VNX OE for File and VNX OE Unified models. The capability to share the storage
array is provided through the purchase of software enablers. Refer to the VNX OE PSB for more information on the
Block, File, and Unified enablers.
In-Family DIP (Data in Place) Conversion: The DIP (Data in Place) conversion allows EMC Professional Services
or a service provider to perform an offline conversion from a VNX5200, VNX5400, VNX5600, VNX5800 based
system to a more powerful VNX2 system up to the VNX7600. Data remains in place during the conversion process
and is accessible as soon as the system is rebooted. This is not a customer installable procedure. Regardless of
whether converting a Block or Unified system, the SPs are changed. A Unified conversion also swaps the Data
Movers. Swapping the components requires no cable movement or additional cable management.
The URC (Upgrade Readiness Checker) and Conversion Wizard are available in USM (Unisphere Service Manager)
to assist in the process. Run the URC before you order to make sure you understand the prerequisites and the scope of
any required changes. For instance older VNX5200 or VNX5400 systems may require power supply upgrades as a
part of the conversion process.
CCA submittal is required for VNX2 DIP Conversions.
The full VNX2 DIP Conversion procedure is available from VNX SolVe.
In general, expect approximately six hours to complete a conversion.
If both a DIP Conversion and BTU (Block to Unified) upgrade are desired, perform the DIP conversion first to avoid
swapping Data Movers later.

Notes:
No conversions to VNX8000 supported.
No conversions from VNX1 to VNX2.
No conversions of VNX2 DC systems.
Limitations:
Conversion to VNX8000 is not supported.
Conversions from VNX1 to VNX2 are not supported.
Conversions of VNX2 DC systems are not supported.
Systems with NL-SAS vault drives cannot be converted to system types that do not support NL-SAS drives
in the Vault. For example, a VNX5200 with NL-SAS vault drives cannot be converted to a VNX5800.
BTU (Block to Unified) Upgrade: The VNX2 BTU (Block to Unified) Upgrade adds File hardware and software to
a VNX2 Block system to make it a VNX2 Unified system. The procedure is done online with no data unavailability.
Management access is unavailable during part of the File install. The upgrade can be fully done using USM and VIA,
requiring brief serial port access to the Control Station. This is not a customer installable procedure.
All VNX2 (VNX5200, VNX5400, VNX5600, VNX5800, VNX7600, VNX8000) Block systems can be upgraded to a
Unified system. The upgrades can only be done on a similar model, for example, upgrade a Block VNX5400 to a
Unified VNX5400.
The URC (Upgrade Readiness Checker) is available in USM (Unisphere Service Manager) to assist in the process.
URC checks that the Block and File OE are compatible, that the SPs are on the same subnet, that the SPs have FC I/O
ports available for DM backend connections, and that the system is not part of a multi-domain environment.
Any problems identified need to be resolved before upgrading. The URC report must be present on the Block system
before installing the BTU enabler.
BTU enabler is installed after URC has run and before new File hardware is installed. USM is used to install the
enabler. The enabler verifies the system supports the upgrade. It checks that the URC has been run and enables SP
ports for use on the Unified system. The enabler is automatically removed once the upgrade completes.

*** There are some older drive types that will be supported on the new VNX platforms, but will not be sold with new systems.
****DPEs ship in a small shipping rack. SPEs, because of their size, ship in a 4U titan shipping rack.
Note: 3.5-inch vault drives are not supported on VNX5200 through VNX7600 (due to the 25x 2.5-inch drive DPE), but are supported
on the VNX8000.
Customer Facing Procedures on mydocuments.emc.com: The VNX-F series list VNX-F5000 and VNX-F7000 as
products and "block only" as the only config. This series only shows documents specific to VNX-F and hides
documents not applicable to VNX-F (file/unified, dedup, thin, compression, etc).
Fixed Capacities: The VNX-F models will be offered with fixed capacities as shown below. Some of the capacity
points can be addressed by 2 or more configurations in which case one for new systems, and the others for upgrades.
In Unisphere, the pool total capacity must match the capacities shown below.
VNX-F5000
1. 2.8 TB usable - NEW: 400GB x 9 drives
2. 5.7 TB usable - NEW & UPGRADE: 400GB x 18 drives
3. 8.5 TB usable - NEW & UPGRADE: 400GB x 27 drives
4. 11.4 TB usable - NEW: 800GB x 18 drives, UPGRADE: 400GB x 36 drives
5. 17.1 TB usable - NEW & UPGRADE: 800GB x 27 drives, UPGRADE: 400GB x 54 drives
6. 22.9 TB usable - NEW & UPGRADE: 1600GB x 18 drives 7. 34.4 TB usable - NEW & UPGRADE: 1600GB x

Supported Upgrades: Offer capacity upgrades within a specific model. For example, users will be able to upgrade
from a VNX-F5000 with 2.8TB usable to a VNX-F5000 with 17.1TB usable. Users will have option to add the
additional capacity purchased to the original pool (default/recommend) or to create a new pool with the additional
capacity.
120 drive DAE (Viking) Upgrade: Except 11.4TB, all capacity points will upgrade by simply adding drives.
The 11.4TB configuration will upgrade by adding Viking and BE SLIC in addition to the required number of
drives. Professional Service engagement is required when user is adding a Viking to an 11.4TB VNX-F7000 as part
of a capacity upgrade.
Unsupported Upgrades: Customers will not be able to upgrade from a VNX-F5000 to a VNX-F7000 or where there
are other limitations with respect to the number of drive slots or DAEs available. For example, customers will not be
able to upgrade from 8.5TB usable to 34.4TB usable on the VNX-F5000 because there will not be enough available
slots for the 800GB drives.
IO Modules: Option to add 1-4 pairs of front-end IO modules (FC, iSCSI - 10GbT, iSCSI - Optical, FCoE - 10GbT,
FCoE - Optical). Additional BE SAS module (8 lane bus expansion module) will be included with every VNX-F with
Viking (except the 11.4TB capacity that does not have a Viking.
Racking: Choose standard EMC rack or customer supplied rack. With Clearwater River the VNX-F7000 with 120
drive DAE (Viking) will only be offered in an EMC dense rack. Customers will need RPQ and Professional Service
engagement to use a customer provided rack. The 11.4TB VNX-F7000 will be sold in either regular rack or dense
rack (recommend).
Optional SW: DARE, Data Protection (SnapView and MirrorView) and Storage Analytics
Included SW: VAAI, SMI-S, VSI, ESI and Unisphere Suite (Unipshere, Unisphere Central, M&R, QOS, Analyzer)
Not Allowed: File/Unified, Thin, Block Dedup and Compression.
SW Setup Guide: A SW quick start guide that tells the user how to quickly create a LUN (from pre-provisioned
pool) and export to a host in Unisphere, and monitor CPU/response time on LUNs. This printed guide is included
with VNX-F purchases and includes upgrade information and pointers to other documentation.
Performance: Detailed performance characterization (IOPS vs Response Time) for both VNX-F5000 and VNX-
F7000 with thick pool LUNs are published on USPEED.
Warranty/Maintenance: The VNX-F has the same software warranty (Media Defects – 90 Days) as other VNX2
models and a one-year limited hardware warranty is included. Users will have option to purchase an enhanced or
premium warranty/maintenance for both software and hardware from 12-60 months. The warranty/maintenance
purchased will be starting day one and replaces the limited one-year hardware warranty that is included.
Existing VNX-F7000: The new VNX-F series will replace the existing VNX-F7000 models in CPQO / price book /
data sheet. Since the existing VNX-Fs are based on VNX2 - they will continue to be supported till EOSL of the
VNX2. Upgrades to the existing VNX-Fs will also continue to be offered in CPQO / price book. The existing VNX-
F7000 reports as a standard VNX7600 systems whereas the new VNX-F5000, VNX-F7000 report as VNX-F5000,
VNX-F7000 respectively.
VNX-F7000 Models: Tables 11-13 represent the VNX-F7000 DPE, DAE and IO models.
VNX-CA2 components: The VNX CA2 includes a VNX5400, (2) Connectrix FC switches, and a single VPLEX
engine.
VNX-CA4 components: The VNX-CA4 includes two VNX5400 systems behind two Connectrix FC switches, and a
