Permutation LP

1. The lesson plan is for a Grade 10 mathematics class on permutation and combination. It includes objectives, procedures, activities, examples and practice problems to help students learn the concepts. 2. Students will participate in a "Red Light, Green Light" activity where they race to the finish line and answer questions to identify situations as permutations or combinations. 3. Permutations refer to arrangements where order matters, while combinations are selections where order does not matter. Formulas are provided to calculate the number of permutations and combinations in different scenarios.

1st Semester S.Y. 2022-2023

LESSON PLAN
(GRADE 10)

I. Objectives
Cognitive: Determine the kinds of permutation.
Psycho motor: Solve problems involving permutation and combination.
Affective: Relate problems of permutation and combination in real life situation.

II. Subject Matter

Topic: Permutation and Combination
References: Grade 10 mathematics module, Khan Academy
Materials: Marker, White Board Eraser, PowerPoint, Laptop
Subject Integrated: Mathematics
Time Frame: 1 hour

III. Procedures
A. Preliminaries
1. Prayer
2. Greetings
3. Checking of attendance
4. Classroom rules

Review:
1. What do call of the arrangement of objects where order is important? Permutation
2. It has a symbol ____ that says to multiply all whole numbers from our chosen number down to 1. Factorial
3. It is the number of ways of selecting from a set of objects where order is not important. Combination

Drill:
"The Wheel of Fortune"
1. Students must pick the appropriate student in their class that has been described by the wheel of fortune.
2. The lucky student will answer the question.
Lesson Proper
A. Activity

Red Light, Green Light

Instructions:

1. The class will be divided into two groups

2. Each group should choose three representatives to play the game
3. Each representative must listen to the music and run when the music plays.
4. The players should freeze if the music stops, if the player moved then he/she is out of the game.
5. Whoever gets to the finished line and can answer the question, wins.

Identify whether the situation is permutation of combination.

1. Choosing 3 desserts from a menu of 10. C

2. Forming plate numbers of motorcycle. P
3. Selecting the fruits in making fruit salad. C

B. Analysis
1. What ideas have you learned or found out during your activity?
2. Can you now differentiate the permutation and combination? And how will you differentiate it?

C. Abstraction
Permutations refer to the different possible arrangements of set of objects where order is important.

Permutation of n objects taken all the time: P(n.n) = n!

Examples:
1. How many 4 different codes can be made from the digits 0,3,6, and 8?
Solution:
P(4,4) = 4!
P(4,4) = (4) (3) (2) (1)
P(4,4) = 24
2. How many ways can you arranged the letters in the word EQUAL?
3. In how many ways can 6 mannequins be arranged in a showroom?
4. In how many ways can 7 persons arrange themselves in a row for picture taking?
n!
Permutation of n objects taken r at a time: P(n,r) =
( n−r ) !
Examples:
1. How many ways can you arrange the letters in the word BREAD using two letters at a time?
Solution:
n!
P(n,r) =
( n−r ) !
5!
P(5,2) =
( 5−2 ) !
( 5 ) ( 4 ) (3)
P(5,2) =
3!
P(5,2) = 20 ways
2. In how many ways can a class of 45 students elect president, vice-president, secretary, treasurer,
and auditor if everyone is qualified to any position?

Circular Permutation
The number of permutations of n objects arranged in a circle is P =(n-1)!
Examples:
1. In how many ways can 6 choir members be seated around a circular table?
2. In how many ways can 8 kids be seated in a merry-go-round if two kids insist to sit beside each other?

Distinguishable Permutations
n!
It is a permutation of a set of objects were some of them are alike. P =
p! q!r! …
1. How many distinguishable permutations are possible with all the letters of the word CALCULATOR?
2. The librarian asks you to arrange the books on a shelf. There are 5 identical Math Books, 7 identical
Science books and 4 identical English books. In how many ways can you arrange them?

Combination – is the number of ways of selecting from set objects where orders is not important.
n!
C(n,r)=
r ! ( n−r ) !
Example:
1. The barangay functionaries created groups to distribute the food packs to the indigent families during
pandemic. In how many ways can they form a group of 4 members from 8 people?

Solution: n=8 and r=4

n!
C(n,r)=
r ! ( n−r ) !
8!
C(8,4)=
4 ! ( 8−4 ) !
( 8 ) (7)(6)(5)(4 !)
C(8,4)=
4 !(4 !)
1680
C(8,4)=
24
C(8,4)= 70

D. Application
Direction: Solve the following statements and choose whether to use permutation or combination
formula.
1. Seven finalists will be chosen among 10 contestants for Mathinig and Trophy will be given to first,
second, and third winners.
a. In how many ways can 7 finalists be chosen?
b. In how many ways can first, second, and third places be declared?

IV. Evaluation
Direction: Determine the kind of permutations to be used in solving the given problems. Write the letter that
represents the kinds of permutation.
a. Permutation of n objects taken all the time
b. Permutation of n objects taken r at a time
c. Circular permutation
d. Distinguishable permutation
____1. In how many ways can 12 friends ride in a Ferris wheel? C
____2. In how many ways can you arrange the word PANDEMIC? A
____3. Find the number of ways can you place 8 COVID patients on a bed if there are 4 available beds in the
facility. B
