BASIC LIFE SUPPORT

ADULT/CHILD/INFANT CPR

DEFINITION:
CPR stands for cardiopulmonary resuscitation. It consists of pushing on the chest (compression) and giving breaths.

CPR has 2 main parts: Compression and giving breaths.


Pushing hard and fast on the chest is the most important part of CPR. When you push on the chest, you pump blood to
the brain and heart.

Compression – is the act of pushing on the chest.


People often don’t work hard enough because they’re afraid of hurting the victim. An injury is unlikely, but it is better
than death. It’s better to push too hard than not hard enough.

Rescue Breathing
Compression is the most important part of CPR. If you’re also able to give breaths, you will help even more. Your
breaths need to make the chest rise. When the chest rises, you know the person has taken in enough air. Before giving
breaths, open the airway.

5 Push and Give breaths. Give 30 compressions and 2 breaths.
 Compressions.
 Move clothes out of the way.
 Put the heel of 1 hand on the lower half of the
breastbone. Put the heel of your other hand on top of the
first hand.
 Push straight down at least 2 inches at a rate of 100 to
120 compressions a minute.
 After each compression, let the chest come back to its
normal position.
 Compress the chest 30 times.
 Breaths:
 After 30 compressions, open the airway with a head tilt-
chin lift.
 After the airway is open, take a normal breath.
 Pinch the nose shut. Cover the mouth with your mouth.
 Give 2 breaths (blow for 1 second each.) Watch for the
chest to begin to rise as you give each breath.
 AED
o Use it as soon as you have it
o Turn it on by lifting the lid or pressing the “ON”
button.
o Follow the prompts
6 Keep going.
 Keep giving sets of compressions and breaths until the
last person starts to breathe or move until someone with
more advance training arrives takes over.

 After the airway is open, take a normal breath.
 Cover the infant’s mouth and nose with your mouth.
 Give 2 breaths (blow foe 1 second each.) Watch for the
chest to begin to rise as you give each breath.
 AED
o Use it as soon as you have it

button.
