This document contains 26 word problems related to time, speed, and distance involving topics like:
- People and objects moving at constant speeds
- Trains passing stations, platforms, and other trains
- Boats traveling with and against river currents
The problems provide quantitative information and ask the reader to calculate unknown values like speeds, distances, and times using equations that relate these variables. Common concepts include determining average speeds when speeds vary, calculating speeds when two objects pass each other, and accounting for additional speed or time from river currents.

Time, speed & distance (1 - 12)
1) A person crosses a 600 m long street in 5 minutes. What is his
speed in km per hour? 2) An aeroplane covers a certain distance at a speed of 240 kmph in 5 2 hours. To cover the same distance in 1 3 hours, it must travel at a speed of? 3) A thief is noticed by a policeman from a distance of 200 m. The thief starts running and the policeman chases him. The thief and the policeman run at the rate of 10 km and 11 km per hour respectively. What is the distance between them after 6 minutes? 4) A person walking at 4 Kmph reaches his office 8 minutes late. If he walks at 6 Kmph, he reaches there 8 minutes earlier. How far is the office from his house? 5) Walking at the rate of 4 kmph a man covers a certain distance in 2 hours 45 min. Running at a speed of 16.5 kmph the man will cover the same distance in. 6) A person goes from A to B at the speed of 40 kmph and comes back at the speed of 60 kmph. What is his average speed for the whole journey? 7) Suresh walks from his home to Bus station. If he walks at the speed of 9 kmph, he reaches the bus station 3 minutes before the arrival of the bus. However, if he walks at the speed of 6 kmph, he misses the bus by 2 minutes. Find the distance covered by him to reach the bus station. 8) An express train travelled at an average speed of 100 km/hr, stopping for 3 minutes after every 75 km. How long did it take to reach its destination 600 km from the starting point? 9) A runner can complete a 750 m race in two and a half minutes. Will he be able to beat another runner who runs at 17.95 km/hr? 10) A boy goes to school at 3 km/hr and return at a speed of 2km/hr. If he takes 5 hours totally, Find the distance from his house to school. 11) A man covers a certain distance by his scooter. Had he travel 6 km/hr faster, then he takes 4 hour less time. But if drives 6 km/hr slower, then he takes 6 hours more. Find the distance.
12) A man travels a certain distance by his car. If he increases his
speed 10 km/hr then he would take 1 hour less time. But if he further increases 10 km/hr of his speed, then he takes further 45 min lesser time. Find the distance.
Problems on trains (13 - 19)
13) A 100 m long train with a speed of 30 km/hr can cross a man in how much time? 14) A 275 m long train crosses a platform of equal length in 33 sec. Find the speed of the train. 15) The ratio between the speeds of two trains is 7: 8. If the second train runs 400 km in 4 hours, then the speed of the first train is? 16) A train crosses a tunnel which is half of the train’s length with a speed of 72 km/hr in 1 min, then find in how much time it will cross another train of double length which is standing on platform with 60% of it’s speed? 17) A train crosses a man with a speed of 72 km/hr in 15 sec. Find in how much time it will cross another train standing on platform which is 50% more long? 18) A train can cross 2 men going along the railway track at 4 km/hr and 5 km/hr in same direction in 10 sec and 12 sec. Find the length of the train. 19) Two trains starting at the same time from 2 stations 200 km apart and going in opposite direction cross each other at a distance of 110 km from one of the stations. What is the ratio of their speeds?
Boats & Streams (20 - 26)
20) Speed of man is 9 km/hour in still water. If the rate of current is 5 km/hour, Find the effective speed of the man upstream. 21) A boat goes 12 km upstream in 48 minutes. The speed of stream is 2 km/hour. What is the speed of boat on still water? 22) In 3 hours, a swimmer can swim 21 km downstream and 15 km against the stream in same time. Find the speed of the stream. 23) A boatman can row a certain distance downstream in 2 hours and upstream the same distance in 3 hours. If the stream flows at a rate of 4 kmph, Find the speed of the boat in still water. 24) Find the time taken by a boat to travel 80 km with the current, if the speed of the boat in still water is 14 km/h and the speed of the current is 6 km/h. 25) The speed of a boat in still water is 11.5 km/hour and the rate of current is 4.5 km/hour. The distance travelled downstream in 15 minutes is 26) A boat takes 28 hours for travelling downstream from point A to point B and coming back to point C midway between A and B. If the velocity of the stream is 6 km/hr and the speed of the boat in still water is 9 km/hr, what is the distance between A and B?
