Problem No. 1: Two forces of equal magnitude P act at an angle θ to each other.

What will be
their resultant?

Problem No. 2: The resultant of two forces P and Q is at right angles to P. show that the angle
between the forces is cos–1(–P/Q).

Problem No. 3: The magnitude of two forces is such that when acting at right angles produces a
resultant force of √20 and when acting at 60 degrees produces a resultant equal to √28. Work out
the magnitude of the two forces.

Problem No. 4: The resultant of two forces is 10N and it is inclined at 60o to one of the forces
whose magnitude is 5N. Determine the magnitude and direction of the other force.

Problem No. 5: Determine the magnitude and direction of the resultant of the following set of
forces acting on a body:

(i) 200 N inclined 30o with East towards North,


(ii) 250 N towards the North,
(iii) 300 N towards North-West, and
(iv) 350 N inclined at 40o with West towards South.

Problem No. 6: Determine the resultant, both in magnitude and direction, of the four forces
acting on the body as shown in the figure given below:

Problem No. 7: Calculate the tensile force in the cables AB and BC as shown in the figure.
Presume the pulleys to be frictionless.

Problem No. 8: A ball of weight W rests upon a smooth horizontal plane and has attached to its
centre two strings AB and AC which pass over frictionless pulleys at B and C and carry loads P
and Q as shown in the figure. If the string AB is horizontal, find the angle α that the string AC
makes with the horizontal when the ball is in a position of equilibrium. Also determine the
reaction force offered by the horizontal surface on the ball.

Problem No. 9: A rigid prismatic bar 5 m long is supported in a vertical plane by hinge at one
end and by a horizontal string attached to it at its midpoint as shown in the figure. A 150 N
weight hangs vertically from the free end of the bar. Neglecting weight of the bar, determine
tension in the string and direction of the reaction at the hinge.

Problem No. 10: A smooth sphere of radius 15 cm and weight 2 N is supported in contact with a
smooth vertical wall by a string whose length equals the radius of the sphere. The string joins a
point on the wall and a point on the surface of the sphere. Workout inclination and the tension in

Problem No. 11: Two rollers of same diameter are supported by an inclined plane and a vertical
wall as shown in the figure. The upper and the lower rollers are respectively 200 N and 250 N in
weight. Assume smooth surfaces; find the reaction induced at the points of support A, B, C and
D.

Problem No. 12: A uniform rod of 10 m length has a self weight of 5 N. The rod carries a
weight of 30 N hung from one of its ends. From what point the rod be suspended so that it
remains horizontal?

Problem No. 13: A uniform rod AB of negligible weight and length l is hinged at the end A and
supported by a string as shown in the figure. What should be the inclination θ of the rod if it is in
a state of equilibrium? Take P = 2Q.

Problem No. 14: A beam AB of length 2 m, hinged at A and supported at B by a cord which
passes over a frictionless pulley, carries a load 50 kN as shown in the figure. Determine the
position of 100 kN load on the beam if it is to remain in equilibrium in horizontal position. Also
determine the reaction at the hinged end.

Problem No. 15: A load P of 3500 N is acting on the boom which is held by a cable BC as
shown in the figure. Neglecting weight of the boom,

(a) Draw the free body diagram of the boom,


(b) Find the tension in the cable BC, and
(c) Determine the reaction at A.

Problem No. 18: Forces equal to P, 2P, 3P and 4P act along the sides AB, BC, CD and DA of a
square ABCD. Find the magnitude, direction and line of action of the resultant.

Problem No. 20: A system of parallel forces acting on a lever is as shown in the figure.
Determine the magnitude, direction and position of the resultant.

Problem No. 21: A uniform rod AB of 1000 cm length and 1 kg mass is suspended from its ends
as shown in the following figure. Outline the free body diagram for the given problem statement
and find the amount of tensions T1 and T2 that would be induced in the strings when a mass of 5
kg is suspended from a point D on the rod? Take acceleration due to gravity equal to 10 m/sec2 if
required.
