6 LANING OF SOLAPUR BIJAPUR OF NH-13-Rev7-Sep23-EN

The document summarizes a case study of a reinforced soil wall constructed along the approaches of structures on a highway project in India. A contractor was seeking a more economical alternative to a conventional reinforced concrete wall for retaining the approaches of bridges and ramps being constructed. Engineers proposed using a MacRes reinforced soil wall system with precast concrete panels and Paraweb reinforcement. The 300 meter long wall was up to 10.4 meters tall and was successfully completed within the scheduled timeline.

Reinforced Soil (RS) Wall was selected as the solution
instead of conventional reinforced concrete wall solution for
the approaches of these structures. The cost of the
conventional solution was very high and the contractor
wanted to have a system that is economical, flexible and
simple to construct.

Solution

Reinforced Soil (RS) Wall system (MacRes) with precast

concrete panels as fascia and Paraweb as reinforcement was
proposed due to its economy, flexibility, speed of
construction, aesthetic finish and long term performance.
Cruciform fascia panels with corrugations and Paraweb of
strengths varying from 30kN to 100kN were used in the
project. The connection between the panels and paraweb
was done by cavity connector casted in the panels. The
Backfill soil with angle of internal friction of 34 degrees was
used as reinforced fill. The maximum height of the RS Wall is
10.4m.
600mm wide aggregate filter media is considered with well
graded aggregate of size ranging between 19.1mm to
9.5mm. RS Wall Design was done as per British Standards
8006 and the Loads considered are Dead Load due to
Pavement crust, Live load from Traffic and Strip Load due to CONSTRUCTION IN PROGRESS
Crash barrier & friction slab. Analysis is done for both
External & internal Stability.
The total construction period of this project is 2.5 years.
