The learner:
a. uses the appropriate oral language, stance and behavior when giving
information, instructions, making explanations, and narrating events in factual
and personal recounts. EN7OL-II-g-2.6.2/ EN7OL-III-b-3

I. BEHAVIORAL OBJECTIVES:
At least 80% of the students should be able to:
 identify the concept of semantics and pragmatics;
 discuss the role of semantics and pragmatics in effective communication; and
 compose sentences highlighting the semantic and pragmatic meaning
of homonym words.

ANSWER:
1. Semantics- deals with the literal meaning
of a language.
2. Pragmatics- deals with the meaning of
words in social context.

word.
5. Connotative- the feelings associated with
a word.

ANALYSIS

unfamiliar terms. Similar to our topic
today, we are going to deal with the
meaning words in Semantic and Pragmatic
form.”

ABSTRACTION
“Before we proceed to phonology, let me
present to you as to why we arrived at
phonology. On Monday, we discussed
about Oral Language, now we are here at
the 6 areas of Oral Language and two of
them are the Pragmatics and Vocabulary
(Semantics) . ”

“Pragmatics is the meaning of words in


social context. The meaning of the words
are based on the feelings and ideas that
people may connect with that word. These
also refer to symbolisms.”

Example:

I heart you! – In Semantics, "heart" refers


to an organ in our body.
Pragmatically, "heart" in this sentence
means "love"- to "heart" someone means “Yes, Ma’am”
you love him/her.
“Yes, Ma’am”
“Did you notice the difference?”

“Do you understand the topic, class?”

APPLICATION
“Define me!”

Directions: Form a team of 4 members


each. Find the meanings of the words they
have received in Semantic and Pragmatic
form. Then, construct sentences within 10
minutes. One sentence for the Semantic
meaning and one for the Pragmatic meaning. “Yes, Ma’am”
Put your answers in a ¼ sheet of paper.
