Geography Presentation

This document discusses how cities affect inhabitants and the environment. It outlines pull factors that attract people to cities like education and employment opportunities. However, cities also face challenges like increased pollution and competition for natural resources that act as push factors. Specific issues addressed include water pollution from waste, air pollution from traffic and industry, and limited land and water resources. The document proposes solutions for environmental management and improving quality of life in cities through sustainable urban planning and development.

How Do Cities Affect Their Inhabitants and the Environment

Pull Factors
● Education and employment
● Technological innovation
Education

Students Can Learn:

● Useful knowledge and Skills

● Adults Can Pursue Lifelong learning
Useful Knowledge And Skills

● Apply for a Job with the skills they learnt

● Adults can continue learning in other cities
Employment
When people receive wages, they can purchase food and other necessities to
improve their well-being.
Technological innovation

It is the use of scientific knowledge to create new products or services

These were due to many skilled researches, designers and entrepreneurs

.
What are the challenges do people in cities face?

Push Factors
● Increased environmental pollution
● Competition for natural resources
Water pollution

Water is essential for human life.

However water supplies are affected
● Improper management of household and industrial waste
Due to broken sewage systems.
Because of the waste, the water quality is reduced
Air pollution

It is caused by the use of coal to generate electricity, high

volume of vehicular traffic and emmisis from factories.
It can lead to
● Respiratory infection
● Lung cancer
● Heart disease
● death
Competition for natural resources

Natural resources like land and water are in high demand

by cities.
● Limited resources
Increased environmental pollution

Cities are major polluters of air and water.

Large amount of fossil fuels are being consumed in the cities
due to the high concentration of people, business and
transport network.
Land resources

● Cities may expand to rural areas, replacing forest and

farmlands or low-leveling hill
Water resources

Cities need to ensure the continual supply of clean water to

meet the needs of people and businesses
● Limited land , hence limits the construction or expansion of
reservoirs
How Can Cities Be Sustainably
Built And Managed?
Now that we have covered how cities affect inhabitants and
environments, lets look at:
● How can Cities Be sustainably built and managed
● Environmental Management
● How to improve quality of life

Some of these topics will be separated into different sections

Many people now life in urban areas than rural areas. Even though we have more
resources than before. There might be pollution, lack of resources. So how will
the government of these city face those challenges and provide a better quality
life for us?
Environmental Management
Pollutions Solutions
Farmer set up drains
● Human factory activities
● Water treatment ponds
● Rainwater mixes with nutrients ● Plants, cattails, fragrant pandan
● Collect rainwater
● Excess nutrients
Reduce air pollutions through laws

The governments have implemented a license plate lottery

which limits the number of new vehicles
Hence,
● Lowering air pollution
● Lessen traffic congestion
Managements of Hazard
● Better quality building materials
1. Withstand hazards
2. Resistance to earthquake
3. Damage of building
● Land use planning can
1. How land resources will be used. (housing, planting, etc.)
2. Disallow building of huge buildings
Improve Quality Of Life

It refers to a person well being.

Methods
● Providing Safe housing
● Providing a variety of transportation modes
● Considering the needs of different groups
Providing safe housing
They are places for rest and social gatherings.

It is buildings constructed to shelter people from weather elements such as

extremely high or low temperature and rain.
Providing variety of transportation modes
There should be at least three different varieties of transport

(Land, water and air)

● Land transportations allows easy travelling in cities (buses, trains, etc.)

● Traffic congestion can be reduced with bigger transports
● Environmental pollution can be reduced with lesser transport
Considering the needs of different groups

Methods
● Pedestrian Paths
At least 1.8 metres wide, furniture built in a space thats away
from path.
● Traffic Crossings
Tactile warnings on the ground to ad the visually
handicapped and elderly pedestrians.
