ACTIVITY IN ENSCI (Science and Technology) GROUP 2
Explain how science and technology affect society and the environment and its role in
nation building.
Science and technology play an important part in nation development. They contribute to a
country's development and advancement by addressing societal issues and improving people's
lives. Scientific discoveries can help nations improve their economic growth, infrastructure,
healthcare systems, and overall well-being. Furthermore, science and technology promote
innovation and creativity, both of which are critical to a country's global competitiveness.
Furthermore, science and technology can help to address environmental challenges and promote
sustainable development. However, it is critical to acknowledge that the function of science and
technology must be balanced by the principles inherent in philosophy. Nations can assure a
comprehensive approach to growth by combining scientific knowledge with philosophical ideas
that take into account ethical, social, and cultural issues.
Science and technology have had both positive and negative effects on the environment. Some
positive effects of science and technology are: renewable energy: advances in science and
technology have made it possible to harness renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, and
hydroelectric power. This has reduced our dependence on fossil fuels and helped to reduce
greenhouse gas emissions.Pollution control: Science and technology have led to the development
of new technologies and practices that reduce pollution and protect the environment. Examples
include catalytic converters in cars, wastewater treatment plants, and air quality monitoring
systems.Conservation: Science and technology have also helped us to understand the importance
of biodiversity and the need to conserve natural habitats. This has led to the establishment of
protected areas and the development of sustainable practices for resource management.
But, on the other hand, we can’t avoid the fact that science and technology also have negative
effects on our society and the environment, and here are some of their disadvantages: climate
change: the use of fossil fuels and other human activities has led to an increase in greenhouse gas
emissions, which are causing climate change. This is leading to rising sea levels, more frequent
and severe weather events, and changes in ecosystems.Habitat destruction: The expansion of
human populations and the use of technology have led to the destruction of natural habitats,
leading to the loss of biodiversity and ecosystem services.Waste and pollution: The production
and disposal of technological products can create waste and pollution that harm the environment.
This includes e-waste, plastic pollution, and other forms of industrial pollution.
In summary, science and technology have had both positive and negative effects on the
environment. While they have provided us with important solutions to environmental problems,
they have also contributed to many of the environmental challenges we face today. It is
important to continue to develop new technologies and practices that prioritize environmental
sustainability and reduce the negative impacts of human activities on the environment.

2. What scientific knowledge or set of scientific knowledge may have been the basis for the
development of the technology?
Science in turn depends on technology, to make instruments for observation and measurement.
There’s no simple way to identify the scientific sources of a technology. It’s a tangled web. Each
technology depends on many different scientific principles. The mobile phone depends on the
science of semiconductors, but also on electrical and radio communication, sound production,
the chemical foundation of rechargeable batteries, and so on. Don’t forget, also, that the phones
have to be made, and the technology of making them depends on other scientific principles. The
internet depends on a similar set of scientific principles, mainly semiconductors and electrical
communication. Information theory is also involved, but information theory is engineering
theory, not science, as it reveals nothing about the physical world.
Human inventions have advanced to the point that robots and artificial intelligence now exist. It's
outstanding to imagine that George Devol constructed the first genuine industrial robot in 1954.
Five years later, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology established the Artificial Intelligence
Laboratory in an effort to mechanically duplicate both human minds and hands. They emulate
humans' abilities to think and react. It brought about a significant shift, particularly for
corporations that use such technology to build products better, faster, and frequently cheaper
than manual laborers. Artificial intelligence and robotics have become our substitutes, even
outperforming humans. I believe that scientific knowledge may have served as the foundation for
the evolution of technology: the human brain. Robots and artificial intelligence were created by a
combination of science and technology. Science is the study of a specific subject, with an
emphasis on discovery, whereas technology is an applied science that focuses on invention.
Science is a system of collecting knowledge based on the scientific method; therefore, the
creation of robotics and intelligence must begin with the application of scientific research to
specific human requirements. Science explains something, whereas technology creates a use for
something. Science is based on experimentation and logical skills, whereas technology includes
design, creation, and production through procedures. It begins with science and concludes with
developed technology, such as robots and artificial intelligence.
