SOURCES FOR ANTHROPOLOGY OPTIONAL

REMINDER
1. This is not only sources you can refer. If you have other sources, where you could cover the topics in
sufficient depth with good understanding, it will work.

2. List is not exhaustive. Given the competitive nature of examination, if you could further enhance
your learning and present it in proper manner, you should be rewarded in examination.

3. You do not have to read all the sources cover to cover. In few, you will find replication of concepts,
So, you can decide on your own discretion. I will mention which books you should read cover to
cover.

4. Few concepts can be referred from other optional subject books like sociology. You have to read only
few chapters.
LEVEL-1 SOURCES
1. Ember and Ember
2. Haviland (for cross referencing)
3. Malinowski videos
4. N.K Vaid for Growth and Genetics, few social, cultural and tribal topics.

NOTE: I highly recommend Ember and Ember for basic understanding of the subject but you should use it
if you have enough time and patience. Otherwise skim out examples, few diagrams and research
case studies.

LEVEL-2 SOURCES
After you have finished your foundation, you should go through these to value add. You do not have to
religiously read everything. But these will help you in revising your concepts and plug gaps. You can
choose one or max. two sources out of these.

5. Sosin Anthropology
6. Hima Bindu
7. Any other coaching notes you are comfortable with.

LEVEL-3 SOURCES
Majority of these are for compulsory reading
1. Physical anthropology----------------P. Nath
2. Prehistory + Archaeology------------Dk Bhattacharya or Sahay & Singh (Hard to find these days)
3. Wiki referencing for Prehistoric Art, Prehistory, Neanderthal, theories, tool making etc.
4. Theories- Upadhyaya & pandit
5. Biology std XII for Genetics etc. (NCERT) / N.K Vaid notes
6. Society Std XII (NCERT)
7. Tribal India- L.P Vidyarthi or, Nadeem Hasnain
(You can refer any one for base and other for cross reference)
8. Socio-cultural – DN Majumdar for cross referencing if you have completed N.K Vaid
9. Indian Anthropology- Nadeem Hasnain
10. Social structure – Ram Ahuja (cross-reference)
11. Yojana 2014 – Tribal edition

LEVEL-4 SOURCES
➢ These sources are to value add and make answers dynamic.
➢ Those preparing for mains 2023, or completed all basic and advanced can jump to it.

10. NCST reports of good governance for tribal development etc., PIB year end review, Sage

NOTE: You do not have to go through every page of these reports. Look for relevant data, facts and
most important case studies.
