Writing catchy subject lines for emails can be a tricky exercise. As with everything you write, a good tip is to keep
the reader in mind. What’s in it for them? What value will they get when they open your email?

A poor subject line for a hotel deal could be:

Valentine sale! 20% off all double rooms this week only!

This is a poor subject line because:

• It includes exclamation marks


• It includes a ‘percent off’
• It includes the word ‘sale’
• It’s salesy overall

A better option might be:

Hey Mitch, here are some tips for making this Valentine’s extra special

This subject line is personalised and it gives the receiver some handy information (given that there are actual tips
inside the email).
