Lesson Idea Name: Parts of a Plant

Grade Level/Content Area: First Grade/ Science

Content Standard Addressed: S1L1. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information about the basic
needs of plants and animals. a. Develop models to identify the parts of a plant—root, stem, leaf, and
flower.

practice and to demonstrate their learning in a
variety of ways.

What is the student learning goal(s) for this lesson idea?

Students can identify the parts of a plant including the root, stem, leaf, and flower. Students can
create their own model after the lesson of a plant.

How do you plan to implement this lesson and integrate the technology? Check all that apply:

☐ Teacher-led: There is no student voice and choice in the activities. Students are guided by the
teacher's direction and expectations. Learning activities are assigned to the
student and mostly practice based.

☐ Student-Led: Students are given voice and choice in the activities. They may select the topic
of learning and/or determine the tool they will use to meet the learning goal. The
teacher facilitates the learning as the students direct their own learning processes.

☐ Problem-based (Real world problems) and/or Publishable: Students are solving problems
and completing projects to demonstrate their learning. Additionally, the projects can be shared
outside of the classroom. (Note: This objective could be reached by displaying the project on the
school’s morning newscast, posting the project to the classroom blog, presenting it to another
class, or publishing it via an outside source.)

Lesson idea implementation:

My students will be leading themselves through the Padlet lesson. They will follow along from left to right

with all of the steps. Teachers will be observing and offering help to any students confused. Teachers will also
be watching the Padlet and ensuring communication is taking place. As a class we would go over our learning
goals before the lesson. I will keep my students engaged by offering exciting digital activities and asking
questions as they go through the lesson. If the lesson took place in the classroom, I would offer that my
students could work with a partner during the lesson. I would access students’ prior knowledge by beginning
with a question to jog their memory on the topic. I would maybe take my students outside to show them
plants to motivate their learning. I am assessing student learning through Quizizz, but I would also be doing
formative assessments throughout. I would conclude this lesson with my summative assessment, and I close
out ticket on Microsoft Forms.

Managing student learning:

The digital lesson I have created using Web 2.0 tools allows for students to be active social learners.
They are actively doing tasks on their devices. There are many interactive activities for my students
to stay engaged. I would shift from passive to active learning using quick chat time with partners. I
would also use random selection for a quick formative assessment.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

These learning activities I have collected and built support the components of UDL framework. Most
of these activities are very engaging for students. There are videos to watch and interactive models
to use. There will also be times where I could incorporate an interactive activity like a quick chatting
time. Students will see representation with the model activity as well.
Reflective Practice:
After designing this lesson idea on the parts of a plant, I think this could be a very helpful tool in the
classroom. I think that this would be helpful for subjects like science where it’s not always easy to
show students the parts of a plant by just verbally telling them. I think these lessons are helpful with
models and keeping students engaged. I look forward to implementing active learning activities in
this lesson and keeping students involved in the lesson. I think young students would have fun with
this way of learning because it has many different activities, and they will not lose their attention.
also look forward to seeing students’ assessment data immediately after the lesson. This is very
helpful for a quick idea of who needs extra help.
