ON-SITE AND FIELD
TESTING
Used coolants can also be monitored in the field
to determine if they are still suitable for service.
• Refractometers can be used to determine level
of EG and PG
• Test strips can be used to measure inhibitor content
level (calibrated to specific coolant types)
3 WAY COOLANT TEST
• pH determination by test strip or handheld pH meter Part number: 23519402
• Coolant sampling and laboratory analysis is
recommended as best practice (using PPS Not for use with organic
sample kit) extended life coolants.
• Refer to PPS bulletins LSB15-05 and LSB15-11

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

WHAT DOES ENGINE COOLANT DO? CAN I MIX COOLANTS?

1. The primary function of a coolant is to remove heat If coolants are mixed the corrosion inhibitor stability
from the engine and performance may be affected. All engine coolant
manufacturers should recommend NO MIXING of
2. The secondary function is to provide anti-freeze,

anti-boil, and anti-corrosion protection

ARE ALL COOLANTS THE SAME? IF NOT, WHY CAN’T I USE TAP WATER?
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE? Water does not contain any corrosion inhibitors and
will lead to metal corrosion. Additionally, it does not

HOW DO I CHANGE THE ENGINE COOLANT?

See Changeover Procedure (page 14).

WHEN DO I CHANGE MY ENGINE COOLANT?

1. After any repairs or replacement to any engine
cooling system component
2. When the coolant has been contaminated or topped
up with water
3. When the warranty period of the coolant has expired
4. When the glycol and inhibitor level has depleted

COMMON COOLANT RELATED ISSUES

SCALE
• Poor quality water is the common cause
of scale formation
• Water quality parameters that can influence the
build up of scale are pH, calcium and magnesium,
total hardness and temperature
• Scale is detrimental as it acts as an insulator
and forms a barrier to heat transfer
• 2mm of scale can reduce heat transfer by 40%
• Hot spots develop causing severe engine damage

RUST
Rust and scale generated without a quality inhibitor package
• Product of the oxidation of iron in the presence being present in coolant
of oxygen
• Caused by oxidation within the cooling system
and is accelerated with higher concentrations
of water and at higher temperatures
• The deposits generated accelerate wear
and reduce heat transfer

Rust on a liner surface caused by poor corrosion inhibition Rust on a water pump caused by poor corrosion inhibition

12 • COOLANT CATALOGUE
AERATION
• Air leaks into the cooling system will promote foam
generation in the coolant
• This in turn promotes pitting which is most noticeable
around water pump impellers
• Inhibitor packages contain anti-foaming additives
CAVITATION CORROSION/EROSION
• Heavy duty applications
• Piston vibration causes formation of bubbles
on wall of liner and subsequent collapse
(shock wave impact of 15 to 20,000 PSI)
• Hammering action drives through liner to allow
coolant to mix with lubes or escape into
combustion chambers

CHANGEOVER BEST PRACTICE
PROCEDURE
DRAIN, FLUSH, FILL Coolant is an important functional fluid in an engine.
Therefore the following should be put in practice:
DRAIN
• When in doubt about the cooling fluid currently in use:
Drain all existing coolant fluid from the cooling system drain, flush, and replace with new coolant
and dispose of it in accordance with standard coolant • When topping up, make sure that the cooling fluid
disposal processes (bearing in mind that used coolant in use is in good, and clean condition
fluid may be considered hazardous waste).
• When topping up, always use the same coolant
FLUSH • When mixing two different coolants together, the
Flushing can be conducted with water (rather than service life is compromised
flushing with new POWERCOOL coolant). Therefore, • If in doubt seek advice. Technical support is available
thoroughly flush the cooling system with good quality (nationally) in a timely manner
water (demineralised or deionised).

GLOSSARY OF TERMS

The overwhelming tendency of most Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM’s) is to primarily recommend
ethylene glycol based coolants in their radiators. Some people in Australia question this; however the OEM’s
are based in areas such as Japan, Europe and North America, whereby the antifreeze component of an
antifreeze/anti boil (glycol) fluid is essential for the winter months.
