Continuous verb (verbos continuados, gerúndio)
Na língua portuguesa, o Present Continuous Tense (Modo Indicativo do
Presente Contínuo) corresponde ao nosso gerúndio e às terminações: -
ando (andando, levando, achando); -endo (comendo, ardendo, fazendo); e -
indo (gerindo, caindo, sorrindo).

Rules Examples
Most of the verbs take ING in the end of Work – Working Dream – Dreaming
the verb: Read – Reading Speak – Speaking

Verbs ending in -E, we drop the E and Dance – Dancing Love – Loving
add ING in the end of the verb: Have – Having Take - Taking

When the verb ends with –IE, it is


replaced by –Y and –ING is added. Die – Dying Lie – Lying

When the verb is monosyllable or Swim – Swimming Travel – Travelling


disyllable and ends in consonant + vowel Cut – Cutting Run - Running
+ consonant (CVC), the last consonant
is duplicated.
Exceptions:
When the last consonant is w or x, it is not doubled:
To snow – snowing // To fix – fixing

If the stressed syllable is the first, the final letter is not doubled.
open – opening // happen – happening

We can also use continuous verbs in the past or future, just replacing the auxiliaries
verbs. In the past, we use WAS and WERE and in the future we use WILL BE.
