This document presents a case study of three different types of residential apartment complexes: Point, Gallery, and Segment. It analyzes and compares the different apartment layouts, amenities, accessibility to services, parking, green spaces, and other design elements. The Point apartments are walk-up buildings with central core access. Gallery apartments are located along corridors with natural light on one side. Segment apartments have isolated, individually accessible units. Metrics like unit sizes, circulation, orientation, and distances to neighborhood services are evaluated for each type.

POINT
CIRCULATION & STREETS
The project is surrounded by collector street that prevents the neighborhood to enter the complex from different
and random entrances and cause traffic and security problem
GALLERY
(CIRCULATION) inside the building:

• corridors are outside the apartment, they are horizontal corridors in one side of the apartment (horizontal
circulation).
• the cores are located in the middle of the apartment, in both sides, the corridors length between each core
should not be more than 15 meter.
DISADVANTAGE : in our example we have the core only in the middle of the apartment. So this counts as a
disadvantage because it will be too much space for the sides apartments which makes the space between the
core & the side apartment 30m
SEGMENT
CIRCULATION
in this complex apartments we have vertical circulation for
each apartment. In the outside of 3 apartments seen like a one
apartments and have one circulation but inside it’s 3
apartments with isolated wall and Individual circulation

CAR PARKS
On each 3 apartments we have parking in
this complex we have 4 parking for all
apartments individual service parking and
each of this parking have place of 60 cars
POINT
COMMUNITY OPEN SPACES

• about 50% of the total residential area

• sport field that is located at the center of the complex to provide easy access to
all the dwelling
• community spaces used for all the inhabits access to these parking cross with
collector streets
USE OF GREEN ARCHITECTURE:
Using green on wall that attempt to create a cooler micro climate in summer
and give the residence a calm and comfortable environment
POINT
SIDEWALKS

• they are applied according to the population density

• runs to all the services
• they are 3m wide
• Provide shortest route between
Dwellings and services
• Kept separate from heavily traffic

however they should’ve been designed

to be protected from wind, rain and sun.
POINT
CAR PARKING

• located along the community street

in direct connection with minor
access street
• there are a common parking for
some apartments
• 3 other apartments own their
individual parking
• community services have their own
parking's
• Common parking do not have more A
then 35 car parking
• Entrance of service less then 40m
• Entrance of residential apartment
about 80m 45°tow way parking

B
Services :
apartment NO.1
• the distance from ( kindergarten – nursery ) to dwellings
NO.1 is 155m from the secondary access
• From school is 223m
• if you use the nearest pedestrian you will walk 90m for
each 1
• the distance from dwelling no.1 to community park Is 91m
Apartment NO.2
• The distance from (kindergarten & nursery ) to dwellings
NO.2 is 256m
• From school is 98m
• From community park 96m 2
3
• you will reduce the distance if you use the pedestrians

Apartment NO.2
• The distance from (kindergarten- nursery ) to Dwelling
no.3 is 125m
• From school is 264m
• From community park is 76m
• You will reduce the distance if you use the pedestrians
GALLERY
CAR PARKS:
•a major street around our complex that is connected with car parking.
•Each apartment has its own car parking. each of them can accommodate 47 cars.
•2 other car parking. which are for the services. each of the can accommodate 37 cars.
the type of parking is (square parking).

GREEN AREA:
• Consist of green area & playgrounds. green spaces should be
available in any dwelling project
• In this example we have enough green area for each dwelling
• Each dwelling. in the 3rd & 6th floor have a small green area
as its shown in the right picture

DISADVANTAGE: no playgrounds & sport fields

GALLER
SIDE WALKS:

• The sidewalks & walkways as well are those running along streets within the residential project.
• There are different types of sidewalks in this project.
• The width of primary access (pedestrians) that comes from the carparks to the apartments is (1.50m).
• The width of secondary access that serve gardens side of dwellings is (18.9 m)
DISADVANTAGE: too much space for the secondary access
SEGMENT
Services

In this complex we have many services such as(nursery , super market , primary school, kindergarten, youth
center, shopping mall)We must place a market at the entrance of a complex due to over crowding, and even
outside the complex it benefits, and this benefits the complex as well. And each of this services must have an
individual parking and easy way from each apartments to it
SEGMENT
GREEN AREA:

This complex has a high percentage of green area and a private

green area between each three of apartments that only the
inhabitants of apartments can use it and a public green area
for all the inhabitant of this Complex.
SEGMENT
SIDEWALKS:

Each group of apartments in this complex have a way to reach

the primary street in complex which located in the middle of
complex,
width of sidewalks should be applied according to population
density
in this complex each of group of apartments 418 person live in
it for this reason the minimal width of side walk should 2.25m

Differences between the three types

1. in point the core is single & vertical better privacy and security and lower traffic, comparing to gallery type that has a
long common corridor that may cause more noise, traffic, and privacy problem, while in gallery the apartments are
arranged side by side but each apartment has an individual core there for the security and privacy are better than
gallery
2. in point type there is the minimum amount of land used for building and maximum amount of land that can be used
for more green area, also in segment type less amount of land is used for build comparing to gallery maximum
amount of land is used for building because of the horizontal circulations
3. due to the apartment form in point the sunlight can entire the dwellings from two different sides in the other hand in
gallery the dwelling is arranged side by side and the long horizontal corridor at other side there is only one side for
sunlight and ventilation and in segment type the apartments are arranged side by side therefor not all the dwellings
can get enough sunlight.
