ART FORMS, ELEMENTS

AND PRINCIPLES
Prepared by Ms. Candice May B. Gamayon
Cagayan de Oro National High School SHS
Principles of Art
Describes the different ways artists can
use each element. When working with
any element, artists seek variety
without chaos and harmony without
monotony. The elements must fit
together and work together to make a
complete and unified whole.
Principles of Art
Learning the principles will help us
recognize and enjoy one of the most
fascinating things about works of arts-
that is - how they are put together.
DESIGN
A skillful blend of elements and
principles
Unified design - results when all the parts
hold together to produce the best
possible effect. Without this overall
principle of unity, the work would “fall
apart”, or appear disorganized and
confusing to the viewer.
BALANCE
a way of combining elements to add a feeling
of equilibrium or stability
• Symmetrical balance
• Asymmetrical balance
• Radial balance
Symmetrical Balance
A formal balance in which two halves of a
work are identical; one half mirrors the
other half. A formal balance in which two
halves of a work are identical; one half
mirrors the other half. This is the simplest
kind of balance.
Symmetrical
Balance
A Shaman’s Helping
Spirits
By Jessie Oonark, 1971

Notice that all parts of

this picture are
equally distributed
on either side of
and imaginary

through the center
Asymmetrical Balance
It is a more informal balance and takes
into account such qualities as hue,
intensity, and value in addition to size
and shape. All these qualities have an
effect on the apparent weight of
objects shown in a work of art.
Asymmetrical Balance
Balancing a large brightly colored are on one side of a picture
with another large shape of a light hue on the other side.
Radial Balance
• It occurs when objects are
positioned around a central
point. An example is a flower
with its petals radiating from the
center.
Radial Balance
Stained Glass Window
Chartres Cathedral, France, 1153-
1260
• Notice how the stained-
glass window was
designed using radial
balance.
• The colored glass shapes
radiate from the center
like the spokes of a
wheel.
Emphasis
Is a way of combining elements
to stress the differences
between those elements.
Emphasis
Artists don’t use the same colors,
values, lines, shapes, forms,
textures and space relationships
over and over again to avoid
monotony. Artists introduce obvious
contrast that establish centers of
interest in their works.

Can you find

contrasts of
hue and line
in this
painting?
Harmony
Refers to a way of combining similar
elements in an artwork to accent
their similarities.
Harmony
It is accomplished through the use of
repetitions and subtle, gradual
changes. A limited number of like
elements often are used in an effort
to tie the picture parts together into a
harmonious whole.
Harmony
Harmony
What colors has
the artist used
repeatedly to
lend harmony
to his painting?
Can you identify
any other art
elements that
have been
repeated to
give the work a
more uniform
appearance?
Variety
It is a way of combining
elements in involved ways to
create intricate and
complicated relationships.
Variety
It is achieved through diversity and change.
Artists turn to this principle when they
want to increase the visual interest of
their work. A picture made up of many
different hues, values, lines, textures and
shapes would be described as complex
Multiplication of the Arcs by Yves Tanguy
In this painting, the artist assembles a complex array of large and
small forms in variety of light and dark values to a haunting
landscape unlike any found on this planet.
Gradation
It is a way of combining elements by
using a series of gradual changes in
those elements. Ex. Gradual change
from small shapes to large shapes or
from dark hue to light hue.
Gradation
What does this gradual change of size accomplish?
Movement
The principle of art used to create the
look and feeling of action to guide
the viewers eye through the
artwork. It is also used to direct the
viewers attention to a center of
interest.
Movement
It is achieved through placement
of elements so that the eyes
follows a certain path.
Movement
The same shape
was repeated
several times and
arranged across
the picture to
create the
sensation of
movement in
certain direction
Rhythm
The careful placement of
repeated elements in an
art work of art to cause a
visual tempo or beat.
Rhythm
The repeated
vertical lines and
the contrast of
light and dark
values create a
rhythm that
draws the
viewer’s eye into
the painting.
Proportion
It is the principle of art
concerned with the
relationship of certain
elements to the whole and to
each other.
Proportion
• If in a certain portion of a painting,
there are more intense hues than dull
hues, more rough textures than smooth,
emphasis is suggested. In a similar
manner, the larger size of one shape
compared with the smaller size of other
shapes creates visual emphasis.
Proportion
The size of
the figure
in this
work
indicates
their
importa-
nce.
Summary
In sum, one has to be very observant and look at,
feel, hear, and sense the work closely – its material, the
techniques the artist used, the elements and principles
of composition. All works of art, whether traditional,
modern, contemporary, need to be experienced at the
level of the senses, emotions, and the mind. These
forms asks us to see more, hear more, taste, smell, and
feel more. In the process, we gain insights peculiar to
the intensity and character of what we encounter
through the arts.
Activity
• Select a monument from your Heritage Mapping
form.
• Questions:
1. How is this monument different from other
monuments of a neighbouring town?
2. How is the subject depicted? (Describe the
monument)
3. What image is projected by the monument?
Assignment:
If you are to change the image/depiction of the
monument, what kind of image/character would that
be? What materials will you use and how will you put
them together. Which elements and principles would
be stressed in this new design.
Draw or make a 3 dimensional scale model with
accompanying written explanation. Post in your FB
account.
