MEXT Scholarship Application Guideline
University Recommendation 2023 Special Program
Enrollment October 2024
Tokyo Metropolitan University (TMU) will start the Program for Cultivation of STEAM personnel with broad view in the
Graduate School of Systems Design from October 2024 succeeding the former program. This is a program through which
students are able to study at a Japanese university with a scholarship from Japanese Government (the Ministry of
Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology; MEXT).

[ Important ]

Before applicants apply for this program, they needs to submit a CV and/or resumes including Name / Nationality /
University / Date of Birth, with their chosen department and research field to Academic Affairs Office
< [email protected]> by November 30, 2023 or as soon as possible. We will suggest a prospective
supervisor according to your preference and CV.

recommendation to the MEXT.

2. Number of Students to be Accepted:


The designated number of candidates that TMU can recommend to MEXT are 8 in total (3 / Master’s Program and 5 /
Doctoral Program).

3. Eligibility:
Applicant must not be residing in Japan but must be able to arrive at Japan prior to the admission as a graduate-level
student. All applicants must be in their home countries when applying. Students who are currently staying in Japan are
not eligible to apply for this program.

4. Nationality and Age:


Applicant must have a nationality of a country which has diplomatic relations with the Japanese government. Applicants
who has Japanese nationality at the time of application is not eligible. A country which is one of ASEAN members
(Indonesia / Cambodia / Singapore / Thailand / Philippines / Brunei / Vietnam / Malaysia / Myanmar / Laos) is especially
desirable. Applicant must have been born on or after April 2, 1989 (under 35).

5. School Fees and Monthly Scholarship:


Examination, admission and tuition fees are exempted. Monthly Scholarships: Master’s students 144,000JPY / Doctoral
students 145,000JPY

6. GPA and Language Requirements:


Applicant must have a minimum GPA of 2.3 or higher. It is calculated by MEXT’s GPA calculation method based on the
last two years of applicant’s academic record. Minimum of N2 (Level 2 of Japanese Language Proficiency Test) or
Common European Framework of Reference for Languages: Learning, teaching, assessment (CEFR) B2 level is required.

7. Schedule:
- Application Period (Submission of Materials): February 28, 2024– March 4 , 2024
- Notification of Acceptance: July, 2024
- Admission: October, 2024
