USE OF CHECKLISTS
A checklist is used in an aircraft as an aid to overcome the limitations of the pilot’s memory.
Checklists used by the Company are in accordance with the aircraft Pilot’s Operating Handbook
and supplemented by several additional checks that are considered as an enhancement to
operational safety. These items include checks of Radios / Navaids / Radio Selectors that are unique
to a particular aircraft, tuning of Navigation aids, etc.
Copies of the Normal and Emergency Checklists are located in the side wall pockets in each aircraft.
The use of the checklist is mandatory for all operations.
Items to be checked may be completed by the “scan or flow” method and then the checklist should
be consulted to make sure all the items have been correctly actioned.
The scan system enables the pilot to memorise the items to be checked and minimises the time
required to carry out the checks. The scan system requires the pilot to methodically work his/her
way around the cockpit checking using a “Reverse Question Mark” as shown.
Any item carrying an “AS REQUIRED” indication on the checklist will require a specific response,
e.g. “ON” or “OFF” as applicable to the switch.
There are some checklist sections that should be memorised and performed correctly without the
need to refer to the written checklist. These are the Taxi, Line Up, and After Landing checks. These
should be completed with your eyes primarily outside the cockpit, not on a checklist.
Also, Taxi checks are not to be commenced until outside of the apron area. You can’t afford to run
into another aircraft, fuel truck, ground equipment or worse, a person running across the apron.
Runup checks are only to be completed when the aircraft is stationary.
The Pilot’s Operating Handbook (Pilot’s Checklist) is to be used as a reference for any action in an
emergency or an abnormal operations situation.
Emergency procedures can be split into 2 types:
1. Actions that need to be taken from memory;
2. Actions that can be referred to a checklist.
Items in the first category would be called Phase 1 actions and would include engine failure after
take-off or an engine fire on start up. You simply do not have time to refer to a checklist in those
circumstances. Procedures in the Emergency Procedures Checklist of the POH shown in Bold
Face Type are immediate action items which should be committed to memory.
Phase 2 actions are at less critical times in the flight and can be accomplished by reference to the
checklist. The pilot in command is to ensure that he/she is familiar with the emergency procedures
in their aircraft type and is familiar with its memory actions.

- SOP’s / FLOW CHECKLIST: C-172R
SOPs vary in length during execution (i.e. Engine Start or Pre-Landing) and frequency (i.e. the rare
occasion when one might perform a Fire In-Flight checklist) and are used throughout this manual.
Airways Aviation flight crew are expected to demonstrate knowledge, risk management ability, and
skill with SOPs so as to ensure the safe and efficient conduct of all ground and flight operations.
Significant time must be spent practicing outside of regularly scheduled training events.

Airways Aviation has adopted the flow concept when conducting various checklists and SOPs.
Flow procedures are conducted by pilots prior to review of the checklist. This process and the items
from the flow are done by memory and are verified afterward by the PIC executing the checklist.

Visually check airplane for general condition during walk-around inspection. Airplane should be
parked in a normal ground attitude (refer to Figure 1-1 in the POH) to ensure that fuel drain
valves allow for accurate sampling. Use of the refueling steps and assist handles will simplify
access to the upper wing surfaces for visual checks and refueling operations.
In cold weather, remove even small accumulations of frost, ice or snow from wing, tail and control
surfaces. Also, make sure that control surfaces contain no internal accumulations of ice or debris.
Prior to flight, check that pitot heater is warm to touch within 30 seconds with battery and pitot heat
switches on. If a night flight is planned, check operation of all lights, and make sure a flashlight is
available.
