CFD Workshop Plan - Tagged

The document outlines a course schedule for computational fluid dynamics (CFD) meshing and simulation. Over four class periods, students will learn about meshing geometry, setting boundary conditions and turbulence models, selecting solution methods, and analyzing results. In-class exercises include flow over a cylinder and transonic flow over an airfoil. Homework includes similar problems as well as channel flow. The final section details additional practice problems involving various fluid flow scenarios.

Simulation – 1. Inviscid; 2. Viscous

Inlet velocity – 10 m/s

Outlet – atmospheric pressure

Mesh objective – mesh convergence study – structured and unstructured

Simulation Objective – velocity field, pressure field, velocity vectors field

Unsteady Flow over a cylinder – 2D

Cylinder diameter – 20 cm
Domain length – 4 m
Domain height – 1 m
Cylinder position – center is aligned with domain length position x = 1.5 m and height position y

Simulation – Laminar Viscous, unsteady.

Reynolds number 250

Mesh objective – medium size – structured and unstructured

Objectives – velocity magnitude, static pressure field, vorticity magnitude, lift and drag
coefficients, observe the oscillatory nature of the flow.

Transonic flow over a NACA 2412 aerofoil

NACA 2412 aerofoil coordinates from airfoiltool.com

Aerofoil chord length – 1 m

Domain size – L = 15 m, H = 5 m

Aerofoil position inside the channel – 5 chord lengths from inlet, mid- domain

Simulation – steady inviscid/viscous (2 turbulence models option)

Velocity – Mach 0.6, Mach 0.8, Mach 0.9

Angle of attack – 2 degrees

Mesh objective – coarse/medium/refined for one speed, BL refinement for viscous flow
Objectives: Shock observation, Lift and drag coefficients, pressure coefficient distributions,
velocity and pressure magnitude, BL (for viscous flow) behaviour.

Supersonic flow over a diamond shape aerofoil

Diamond aerofoil chord – 1 m
