THANKSGIVING
th
It was the 17 century in England. These people were the Puritans and their church was different from the
Church of England. Many people didn´t like them. Some Puritans wanted to go to a new country.
In 1620, 101 Puritans left Plymouth, England, on the Mayflower ship. They became Pilgrims and they sailed to the
new world. The trip was long and difficult. Many people got sick but they didn’t give up and they continued sailing.
When they arrived to the new world they built a town that they named “Plymouth”, they also built a church, too.
The first winter was very difficult for them. It was very cold and they didn´t have enough food. So, many people
couldn´t survive. In the spring, they became friends with the Native Indians. The Indians taught the Pilgrims about the
new land. They taught how to hunt, plant and fish.
The fall harvest was very good so the Pilgrims wanted to celebrate and give thanks to the Indians with a big dinner.
That was the first celebration of the first Thanksgiving.
In 1863, Abraham Lincoln announced that the Thanksgiving Day would be an official holiday. It would be always
celebrated on the Fourth Thursday in November.
Today in the United States, the families and friends get together on Thanksgiving Day. They give thanks and enjoy a
turkey dinner with cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie.
