TREATMENT FOR DOWN SYNDROME

There’s no cure for Down syndrome, but treatment is available to help your child
reach their full potential. Treatment focuses on helping your child thrive physically
and mentally. Treatment options could include:

 Physical or occupational therapy.

 Speech therapy.
 Participating in special education programs in school.
 Treating any underlying medical conditions.

-Timely surgeries for cardiac and GI anomalies are necessary to prevent

serious complications.

 Wearing glasses for vision problems or assisted hearing devices for hearing loss.

NURSING DIAGNOSIS & INTERVENTION

Delayed growth and development related to impaired ability to achieve

developmental tasks

 Provide environmental stimulation in a supervised setting. Social interaction &

activities are essential for development in all children, but the child with
cognitive impairment needs much more environmental enrichment.

 Provide resources to the child & family of therapeutic programs, exercises, and
activities designed to address developmental delays in the early years in order to
reach their developmental potential later in childhood.

 Modify gross motor and sensory activities to accommodate the toddler's

limitations and promote a sense of autonomy.

Self-care deficit: Bathing & hygiene, dressing, feeding, toileting related to

cognitive impairment

 Consistent care by the same people in which the child can be encouraged to have
some control and perform age-appropriate tasks within the limitations of the
disability helps to provide a sense of trust & routine.

 Encourage independence & allow the child to make as many choices as possible
to ensure the child a better feeling of control & self-worth.

 Give the child positive reinforcement for demonstrating appropriate skills &
behaviors to promote similar behavior in the future.
PREVENTION

There's no way to prevent Down syndrome. If you're at high risk of having a child
with Down syndrome or you already have one child with Down syndrome, you may
want to consult a genetic counselor before becoming pregnant.

A genetic counselor can help you understand your chances of having a child with
Down syndrome. He or she can also explain the prenatal tests that are available and
help explain the pros and cons of testing.

(Genetic counselors are health care professionals who have specialized education
and training in the field of medical genetics. Using family history, a genetic
counselor will assess individual or family risk of an inherited condition, such as a
genetic disorder or a birth defect.)

EDUCATION

( HOW DO YOU EDUCATE PARENTS HAVING A CHILD WITH DOWN

SYNDROME)

 If your child has Down syndrome, you may at first have feelings of loss, guilt,
and fear of the unknown. Talking with other parents of kids with Down syndrome
may help you deal with your concerns and find ways to look toward the future.
Many parents find that learning as much as they can about the condition helps
ease fears.
 Children with Down syndrome benefit from getting early intervention services as
soon as possible. Physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech/feeding
therapy can help, and early childhood educators can work with your child to
encourage and boost development.
 States provide early intervention services to kids with disabilities from birth to
age 3. Check with a health care provider — a doctor, nurse, developmental
pediatrician, or a social worker — to find resources in your area.
