Introduction
Welcome to Logistics and Supply chain management 1A, a module which gives an overview of
how supply chain management is a core function in modern business, irrespective of industry
or size. The purpose of this module is to provide students with a solid understanding and insight
into the fundamentals of supply chain management. Key areas covered by the course include,
among others, logistics, procurement, inventory management, warehousing management,
customer service ,transportation, global logistics, quality management, public sector
procurement, sourcing and information technology. The module covers current issues in
logistics and supply chain management which focuses on coordinating logistics across supply
chains.
Supply chain management is the active management of supply chain activities to maximise
customer value and achieve a sustainable competitive advantage in a global market. As supply
chains become longer and more complex, there is a growing need for supply chain
management (SCM) skills and practitioners. We hope that this module will provide you with a
good stepping stone to acquire knowledge and skills in the supply chain environment.
Please remember that to get the most out of this module; it is essential that you actually read
all the prescribed texts and sections of prescribed work before classes. When doing so, keep a
pencil handy, and make notes, questions, and comments as you read so that you engage more
deeply with the content. Upon successful completion of this module you should be equipped

Overview:
In this learning unit, you will be introduced to the basics of supply chain management (SCM).
We will look at the components of SCM, as well as current trends in SCM. This unit also looks
at the benefits and performance drivers of SCM, the concept of supply chain network design,
as well as the stages of a product life cycle and its effects on supply chain and logistics. Finally,
we will look at logistics management and logistics activities.

Overview:
Public sector procurement deals with the provision, procurement, delivery and allocation of
goods and services to and by the government and/or its citizens. In trying to promote
uniformity, and to curb challenges relating to financial mismanagement and misuse of public
funds, a significant number of changes have been implemented in South Africa.
In this learning unit, we will look at the evolution of supply chain management (SCM) within
the South African content as well as contrast between related concepts. The learning unit
will also detail the various appropriate legislature and outline government strategic planning
and policy objectives. Thereafter, a contrast between procurement methods (sourcing
strategies) will be outlined with a discussion on the pillars of the public procurement process.
Finally, the learning unit will explain the various role plays in procurement methods and
factors that influence public procurement.

Overview:
Quality is an important part of the supply chain, whether it pertains to quality checks when
raw materials enter the factory, quality inspections during the manufacturing process or
quality checks before goods are dispatched to the customer.
In this learning unit, we will look at operational issues in supply chain management. We will
focus on the components, dimensions and the principles of quality and total quality
management (TQM). We will also look at TQM as an innovative way of thinking that affects
the culture, technology and strategy of an organisation. We will also explore the role of
standards in quality assurance as well as describe the purpose of specifications in the supply
chain and list the different approaches to quality assurance. We conclude with supplier
certification.
