2.2 Rationale
The purpose of this course is to provide students with a thorough grounding in the various aspects
of international business to equip them for their subsequent professional life.
2.3 Aims/Goals
(1) An overview of the means of conducting international business, with an emphasis on what makes
international business different from domestic business.
(2) The impact of the political, cultural and social systems within countries on the conduct of
international business.
(3) The major theories explaining international business transactions and the institutions influencing
those activities.
(4) Foreign exchange and exchange rate systems and institutions and their impact on international
business.
(6) The dynamic interface between governments and companies attempting to conduct foreign
business activities.
(8) International operating concerns of where to go, whether and how to collaborate with other
companies, and how to control the company as it expands internationally.
(9) The Internet and other technological developments and their impact in the conduct of
international business.
(10) The management of concerns about international activities that fall largely within functional
disciplines of business.
Fully understand and appreciate the forces of globalization and their impact on a firm’s operation
both domestically and worldwide.
Understand the motives for and the methods used in engaging in international business activities.
Describe and explain the role of the state in the conduct of international business activities.
Describe and explain the role of international organizations and international frameworks such as
the WTO, the IMF and the International Financial System in the conduct of international
business activities.
Understand the effects of socio-cultural systems within countries on the conduct of international
business.
Describe and explain the major theories explaining international business transactions and the
institutions influencing those activities.
Describe and explain the foreign exchange systems and institutions that facilitate international
transactions.
Understand international operating concerns of where to go, whether and how to collaborate with
other companies, and how to control the company as it expands internationally.
Understand the management concerns in respect of international activities that fall largely within
functional disciplines of business.
Identify and explain the firm level changes required for successful participation in international
business activities.
3. Course Evaluation:
***Note: Neither Mid Term Exam nor Grand Quiz will have a re-take / delayed / re-sit/ option, once it
is missed there would be no possibility to do it again, irrespective of the reason)- Once you miss it, you
missed it!!!
4. Teaching Strategies:
Class sessions will be based on a mixture of lectures, guest lecture presentations, case analysis and
presentations, and a review of selected readings. Students are expected to read ahead and to prepare
the assigned case(s) before coming to class and to actively participate in class discussion. Students
are encouraged to draw on previous work experience and share these during class discussion. Cases
will be assigned as the class progresses.

6. Term Paper:
As previously indicated, a term paper is required. This will be worth 20% of the course marks and
will be due on 2nd April, 2024. The following rules and grading criteria should be observed.
a. The paper must have a focus. When possible, it should employ some conceptual/theoretical and
empirical framework to provide direction for the investigation. It is not acceptable to included
materials without showing how they are related to each other or to the central theme of the paper.
b. The paper must go beyond merely repeating ideas and studies of other people. Those ideas and
results must be integrated within the chosen framework. The paper should not simply describe the
activities but should also explain them and discuss their implications.
d. Footnotes/references must be used. Bibliography is optional. The student should follow appropriate
guidelines as explained in any style manual for writers. The textbook itself should also be useful for
this purpose.
h. The paper must include the student’s own comments or original ideas.
i. The paper should not exceed 20 type-written pages, double spaced excluding Appendices.
Term Paper Topic will be shared with the student in class and also on MyElearning in due course of
time, by the Lecturer.
